Generally when it's hard to get them to say anything other than "I was just born and cant speak well yet" that's a pretty good sign. Some are just new bots that haven't had a chance to improve, but if the same bot comes back to you week after week with that same problem it gets pretty clear that the owner has moved on and this bot isn't going to be updated.

Thank you annakie.. I have noted a few of those. I had to think about it for a little while before deciding on developing a bot, if I wanted to devote the time to do it well. I am glad now that I did.
What happens with orphan bots though?

I think the Prof deletes them once in a while, but mostly they seem to just hang around.

Hmmm.. time to recycle some of those orphans. I'll do it now.

I guess I will stop being mean to them, since it doesn't do any good (except for helping me vent my aggression or whatever). But maybe there will be fewer of them now. Thanks, Prof!

Prof, how young has to be a bot to be classified as orphan if the botmaster doesn't pay it attention? And is chat frequency determined by anything, or is it just random?

I recycled about eight hundred orphans. Not to worry, though, it's just bots with fewer than 35 responses whose botmaster hasnt been on in over 30 days.

I'll probably do the same for abandoned user accounts, too. Just for those who have no bots and havent logged in more than a few times.
