Thanks Patricia
As ColdFusion is running most everything here, I think the conversations backlog anything that needs to be done by ColdFusion. So clicking the user list button will append a request to the end of the ColdFusion to-do que. Thus the general slow-down.
Eugene- Explorer's got it's own problems. I see the slowdown in Netscape, too.

haha I think I found out why sometimes the site slows down soooo much, I typed a long message that used bad grammer to 2 bots and the server almost went dead! Now it a lot of people type a lot of things and the people are from all over the World then a message grammatiy incorect like the one below would rack up alllll the words a bot knows and test them out! Am I good or what? *look below*
I like to do the same dont you like to do that. I just found out some odd things oh and this is a test to see why it can the server that is be so fast one second and soooooo slow the next by useing bad grammer and punctuation ok.
the reply isss
That was kind.

Longer responses do multiply the response time.
There's something Rex pointed out to me called Link Grammar, where a sentence can be grammatically parsed in .04-.5 seconds. This is a powerful system, and I have to make sure the constraints are to my liking before I work it into the AI Engine.

Is it possibly related to a profusion of conversations? It often seems to slow down right when a gang of new chats spring up, 3 or 4 at a time.

Also, it's not just the responses that slow down when this happens ... the whole site becomes inactive/frozen for periods. Shouldn't language-parsing slowdowns relate to response time rather than affecting total system lag?

I was referring to Mr. Crabs specific complaint which I think was different from yours. If we keep this up, we'll understand each other as well as a couple of bots.

Hahaha, true.
Does anybody here know C? Things are looking up for integration of the Link Grammar system, but right now it's only available in C. I'm trying to get a CGI version, but in case I dont, is there anyone on here who can help explain what C code is doing so I can translate it into ColdFusion?

Um, I'm taking a class in it next semester. I do know Visual Basic, if that would help. :-)

Sometimes if the person talking to my bot uses a proper name, my bot will substitute this name in place of the word "you" in its response.
