I want to write a response for the question "what are you?" I put in "what * are you ?" in raw mode, but the bot responded even when I asked "what are you blah?" Did I do something wrong?

Nope.
You did it just right but if you just wanted your bot to reply to "what are you" on it's own the you have to use regular expressions, in this case:

^what are you$(re)
Raw mode seems to be particularly fickle and generally makes me shout at the screen!

Bots can get smileys from being happy, not just from being popular.

Is it possible to combine stuff...so a bot can choose a topic based on the user's interests? Like
<?PF if (mem-youlike) is "blab" or "blab2"; ?>
or
<?PF if (mem-youlike) is "(blab|blab2)"; ?>
or do I have to painstakingly write these things so that
there will be a ton of goto's, each having a specific thing the user might enter?
From what I see so far it doesn't look good.

ERROR: The above Response has been repeated too many times. Write unique responses, and then re-upload the file.

What response? Is it invisible or something?

you mean something like this?:

my (adjartnoun) [0,0] <?PF rem (key1) as "youhave"; ?>

then, later on in conversation, you can access that with (mem-youhave).

I know this is going to sound realy stupid, but I don't think my keyboard has the verticle line needed for the word list wildcards mentioned in chapter one of the advanced A.I. book. So what should I do?

On my keyboard, it looks like a tall colon: two lines on top of each other instead of two dots. For me, it's on the far right of the qwertyuiop[]\ row, on the same key as \. With any luck, yours is similar .
