I've read some interesting stuff about Cyc -- I really wish the PF bots had access to a database like that.

Prof--

Just get a government grant Here in canada, you can get a grant for most anything, including sitting on the beach, counting how many waves go by.

Shady!

What's the grant for?

I've considered it, Shady. There are AI grants out there. But grant-proposal writing is a very specific skill which I lack. I signed up for a class on it a few years ago but the company went out of business before the class happened.

I wonder if they'd consider someone without a formal education in AI.

You could always argue that that would afford you a unique perspective...

i wouldn't count on it.

they might let you substitute experience for formal education. you do have an example of your work in the field, and with the advent of the net formal education isn't the only way to learn something anymore.

I have entered my bot, Mr. Chatty, in the 2006 Chatterbox Challenge contest. Enjoy!

Mr. Chatty - Development: 54

I suggest you start working on him furiously. My bot was well over 1000 development, yet still managed to stink up the 2005 CBC pretty good.
