I heard about Fable, and am dying to play it. I think I'm going to ask for it for Christmas.
As to the election, Bush is going to win. (Imma is going to make sure of it muahahahaha)

Filthy humans! It matters little who wins your pathetic election. For I, ZIM, will soon rule your planet, and rain DOOM DOOM DOOM down upon it!

Yeah, I'm pretty sure Kerry doesn't favor the draft, but neither does Bush.

I know one Bush-supporter who thinks that the Iraqi prisoner-abuse wouldn't have happened if we still had the draft. He figures that the army needs some non-gung-ho types to balance it out. *shrug*

I fail to understand that argument. It was just a few soldiers doing the abuse, right? Would draftees have stopped them?

Prof - Never heard of Toon, does it cost much or use weird D&D dice? (I only have 2 sets and they're UGLY!
) I think probably Universalis would be easier to get my family to play - less rules to remember, and so on.
I actually used to run a semi-freeform game on IRC that I called Twisted. I was still a GM, but my ideas were based somewhat on what the characters decided to do. I let players make weird ass chars like the guy who had to get stoned to do magic, and the stupid barbarian who liked to swing around on ceiling fans. There weren't any stats, everything that happened was just what we thought they'd logically be able to do. I ran one game that lasted 6 hours, involving an insane asylum with a toilet that led into the Toilet Zone, which was ruled by Son of Spam, who had an evil plot to take over the world by controlling the administrator of the insane asylum. It was a pretty damn cool game, and my players begged for more heh.
I'd love to try Fable too, but I don't have an Xbox and doubt I'll be getting one since I already have a Gamecube. Oh well.

Think the abuse was imbedded by the superiors, and although they do say that a draftee army is slightly more "civilised" (draftees come from all over society, whereas a professional army doesn't like it's soldiers to be too bright), I think in a war situation everyone becomes an animal.

Onyx- there's one main book and then optional expansions which are fun. I think each is $9.99, but it's probably more like $19.99 these days. If you've got a creative family, then the Universalis game sounds fun.
The freeform adventures sound totally fun! I love the idea of the high magician and ceiling-fan barbarian.
I started something like that on the old ISCA BBS in the early days of the internet before the web took off. It was a forum called Camelot and I started this long story called "The Quest". It was freeform but a friend and I created most aspects of the world and the antagonists. It was really neat, and I might make a book out of it someday.
Fable's great but your mileage on the XBox might be limited- I think next year they're coming out with XBox 2. But that means prices will be dropping.

Look at why people go into the army. It's made to appeal to those with lower income, with harder lives. Now some of those people might believe the rhetoric about good and evil. And if the Iraqis are evil, then they get whatever's coming to em, right? Because we're the good guys. And if you've had a tough life, what feels better than humiliating some Iraqis who deserve it?
That's the mindset.
Add in any number of people who see the Iraqis as human beings in a different situation (not necessarily draftees- just anyone like that), and you lower the chances of it happening, but it still very much could.

Ok, I have some new data from the polls and averages. It's based on statewide polls from October 28th through October 31st. It's basically the same, except now Kerry has Wisconsin and Hawaii. The count I'm predicting will be
Bush: 277
Kerry: 252
Iowa could reverse, however. It's only seperated by .31 of a percentage. In that case it would be:
Bush: 270
Kerry: 259
Too close to call, basically.

My whole school's against Kerry...what do they know though
If I was old enough to vote, I'd go with Kerry...although he -does- look like one of those plastic figures you see in toy stores...Oh well.
There's a nice downloadable pc game. It's called Planeshift (www.planeshift.it). It isn't finished yet and the version they have up now is just a part of it. They're almost finished with the newer version though (not the final yet). The good thing about it is that it'll always be free. The graphics are pretty nice and it's real-time so yah...there's supposed to be combat in the upcoming release.

I don't care what Kerry looks like, I just think it would be nice if he had a constant opinion about something.
I used to play freeform RPG's in college. We had one game where all three players were playing two copies of themselves. Two of us also played minor villains in a subplot, and I sometimes took over for an NPC since the GM had borrowed the character from me.
