The way I did it looks like:
keyphrase: knock knock
Resp: Who's there?
Seek: (*)
Resp: (key1) who?
Seek: xnomatch
Resp: laughter, confusion, etc.

Do the plugin (gossipname) only work in a gossip phrase?

Yes. But you can use (friend) or (enemy) in any keyphrase, anywhere.
