This is a forum or general chit-chat, small talk, a "hey, how ya doing?" and such. Or hell, get crazy deep on something. Whatever you like.

"Shaddai" is also Hebrew. Are you sure this language isn't a compilation of words from various other languages?

Oh, that's there too. I was wondering why I couldn't get the memory of Amy Grant singing "El Shaddai" out of my head after reading that. Now I am stuck with the thought of Amy Grant singing a duet with Weird Al Yankovic. It isn't easy being me.

Regarding the song... according to one source, the words aren't meant to mean anything:

Relevant comment in the thread: It's the "lyrics" to Now We Are Free by Lisa Gerrard. I have since discovered that it's not an actual language at all, but rather sounds she produces (using her voice as an instument) designed to evoke an emotional response. Thanks to all for your comments, though!

You are finally coming into focus for me, Bev. Please don't change.
This is the life! Yeah, by HannahMontana, right, Ulrike? Oh you mean, Weird Al. Shucks.

But if you want it to be your history and tradition, you have to choose ancestors who stayed where they were while it was happening

Well, psimagus, it's like this. It's hard to stay put when the king's men want to use your butt for target practice. Just kidding. Actually, I believe that on my Irish side, my progenitor was persuaded to come to Georgia in lieu of paying back taxes or going to prison. In fact, he finally worked his taxes off and remained a loyal subject until his death right before the Tea Party (Irish tea, of course)

Let's see... most of my mom's side of the family came over from Ireland during the potato famine. There's supposed to be French Huguenot on my dad's side of the family, who fled to Canada during the persecution. And there are anecdotal tales on both sides of Native American blood. Most accessible to me in the states? The Native American side. Unfortunately, I have no clue what tribe(s) they might have been.

Oh, and I had one great-something-uncle beheaded by Mary Queen of Scots.

Ulrike, you don't want to hear me say this, but I think we are related (bad for you if it's true). My dad's ancestor was Huguenot also. The strange thing was that after all the persecution, he did return to his roots. They were consigned to Southampton (UK) until about the 1650s. My dad's ancestor came to Virginia instead of going to Canada. It's very interesting that you have a Native American side.

It must have been a signal honor to be beheaded by Mary. Wasn't she beheaded also? The only claim to fame my dad's side had was that my Great-grandpa was the last (or one of the last) Confederate officers to leave Gettysburg - but that was because he couldn't walk. I think his horse threw him and someone shot him in the foot. Oh, well.

Eh, everyone's related if you go back far enough. (And I'm too lazy to look up Mary Queen of Scots just now, but I think she was eventually beheaded)

Back on the Lisa Gerrard thing (and let me preface this by saying that personally I quite like her stuff) my father is a newspaper photographer and had to go out to snap her when she was being interviewed one time. He told me that at the part where she got on to talking about her singing language and how she was attempting to go beyond the meaning of words to the emotional core underneath she sounded like a bit of an arrogant twat (actually he didn't put it like that, I had to clean it up a little). He said he had to fight the urge to say "in other words, you're crap and you can't write real lyrics".

I had other things I wanted to comment on after reading the last 100+ posts in this thread, but I think I lost it and now I have to go change into a costume for a party.

No wait I remember one question I wanted to ask. Since I changed computers I realised I don't get chat pop ups from bots or humans any more. I also don't get the little message saying that IE just blocked a pop up. Anyone know where I go digging to address this?

Go to TOOLS...pop up blocker....turn of pop up blocker. the tools is on the right hand side just above the my bots if you are here.

The thing about immigration to the new world is how fast your ancestry spreads over cultures. I am English, Irish, Welsh, Finnish, Russian, Hungarian. etc etc. I would love to meet all my ancestors
