The main problem with modern society: a single human makes a lot of mistakes but a country is a LOT of humans all combining their mistakes together so they can affect a lot more people in a lot more annoying ways.

Which is the beauty of a Constitution built around providing inalienable protections to individuals rather than providing increasing power to the the government. Not that ours is as successful as it should be at it, but the principle stands.

The idea was to have checks and balances to make it more difficult to abuse power. Granted, abuse has taken place and our government has done a lot of things they shouldn't that were unconstitutional, but I still think the setup was pretty good to have such a slow corruption rate.
Incidently, I hate Netscape, and I also hate the computer I am using right now. The two good ones with reasonable resoluytion, Internet Explorer, and some resistence to crashing every five minutes, are in use and I didn't have any more time to wait. Ah, the joys of using a terminal at a public library.

Sometimes I think we have too many rights though. Criminals get to sit around for years while they appeal their murder convictions and such. Not to mention the "mentally disabled" who never have consequences for their actions, even when they abuse the people who try to help them. I could go on and on, but I won't.

Another disgruntled former human services worker, Onyx? I agree with you there; those people know perfectly well what they are doing. But I don't think we have too many rights. I mean, look at what's happening right now. All the "president" has to do is mention war and terrorism, and suddenly he decides he can do whatever he wants. (That's the short version, of course.)

Yeah -- we have too few rights. Or rather maybe we do have the rights we need but the court finds against them (deciding in favor of drug laws, tax laws, search and seizure laws, gun laws, state religion, etc.)
The point of those laws Onyx is not to protect criminals but to protect the innocent. We have perhaps one of (if not THE) best justice systems in the world, but we still send innocents to jail and the chair and find out too late -- not to mention the many whose crimes are due to bad laws. There are those who take advantage, but the framers of the constitution understood it was more important to protect the innocent than to punish the guilty.
But I don't believe you're half as misanthropic as you claim. After all, you're hanging out in a public chat room!

Actually my mom works with these "mentally disabled" (why can't they just call em retards?
) ppl who think nothing of throwing stuff at the employees of the place. And her superiors have basically told em they can't do anything but feed these ppl & give em meds & clean up after em cuz most of em shit their pants on a regular basis. One guy likes to molest kids and another is always purposely injuring himself and these people are supposed to be treated like adults??? Hell, half of us who ARE adults don't get to be treated like adults, why should some retard who acts like a 2 year old get that priviledge?
As for the laws that try to protect the innocent and let criminals sit around for years appealing... I think it's all well and good when they aren't sure if the person committed the crime or not. But what about someone with a criminal history? They sit around just as long as the innocent do, and everyone's pretty sure they're guilty. But they spend lots of tax dollars feeding them and dealing with trial after trial after trial on their behalf. And the 3 strikes you're out thing doesn't seem to be particularly effective. A lot of people sit in prison for years being fed and taken care of better than a lot of residents of this country. It gets to where you almost wanna commit a crime so you can have 3 square meals a day. And then people like my mom's ex get off with a slap on the wrist. He stalked her for I don't know how long and all they did was fine him a little bit and stick him in jail overnight until he sobered up, and half the times my mom reported him breaking the restraining order, the cops didn't even show up (or if they did they didn't believe a damn word she said).
Anyway I can't fix the system, I just like bitching about it now and then. Oh, and the next time you feel like hearing me rant, ask me about a year or 2 ago when one of my friends was murdered. (We hardly ever have murders here so ppl will be talking about it for years.)

I actually prefer "retarded" to "disabled". I don't know why anyone would prefer "disabled". A vegetable is disabled. Someone who has to struggle more than others to do the same stuff is retarded.

Maybe we are even more politcally correct up here in Canada. For the last several years what used to be the society for the retarded, mentally disabled, whatever, has moved through all the phases of 'challenged' 'differently abled' until they arrive at "Association for Community Living".
