Art is in the eye of the perceiver so utterly that even well made porn can be considered art to a porn afficianado. what do you think about professional wrestling? i figure you dont find it artistic, yeah? I used to do it for a variety show I co-hosted and came to learn it to be a rather graceful combination of dance, gymnastics, improv sketch work/building and general theatrics... not just an art, but several arts. So can be said of really most anything. A Pile of rubbish? well, if you look at it in the right way (sadly for most people this means 'in a museum or gallery') a pile of rubbish does/can carry a deeper multilayered meaning or emotional impact. if it is beheld as art then so it is.

'Art' that sends a message might not be art but propaganda. Art can be, and is, its own thing.
I went to a life drawing session (naked people) one time in college. The model that day was a girl I knew. She had a lovely body, good shape and proportions and was pretty in every way really, but what struck me the most about her looks, even nude, was her HANDS. They were just beautiful to draw. Some other people said the same thing.

I tend to believe that anything becomes complex and fascinating if you let yurself get interested in it. But I also think that what makes porn porn is (at least in part) the attitude that the audience is presumed to take with respect to it.
Actually, I think porn may at times have a positive function. If a man can't see anything in a woman beyond physical sexual characteristics, then it is probably better that he stay at home and masturbate, aided by Playboy, or whatever, than that he get involved with a real woman, of whose feelings, thoughts, aspirations, and dignity he has no conception, much less concern. With some of the guys I see in transcripts, it's rather frightening to imagine them alone with a real woman! Whoever provides them with an alternative is doing a favor for some woman, somewhere!

I would agree completely that it is tragic if anyone becomes focused entirely on the sexual aspects of a person, and if erotic art has that effect on people, then that would be something bad about it.
On the other hand, I don't think that beautiful paintings of sunsets make people forget about other aspects of life. I'm inclined to hope that, in the same way, erotic art doesn't cause people to forget about other aspects of life.
I might add that my bot, "Irina Khalidar," is not ENTIRELY about sex, nor is she simply passive. She will kick a guest off if he utters a vulgar word; she starts out with conversation about cooking, music, various subjects, and if the guest tries to push through this, she will castigate him. In fact, although it is possible to "go all the way" with her, almost no guests actually do.

I've written screen savers in Visual Basic 3.0. The rest of the world is using version 6 or 7, but after I decided I didn't want to do programming for a living I lost the motivation to upgrade.

Well, porn is a pretty functional thing. A can opener is designed to open cans. A mirror is designed to look into. And porn is designed to get you off, no more, no less.
An image or other rendition that isn't so cut and dried in its purpose is more likely to be art, especially if some feeling/thought/skill went into it.

Art that's just a creative idea or the expression of emotions isn't real art IMHO. It's fine if someone wants to express his/her emotions with a poem, a painting, a song, whatever - but that's something everyone can do. And I don't believe in "everyone's an artist".
As it was mentioned some postings above - art has always something to do with a great amount of skill. (or as we say in German: "Kunst kommt von Können, nicht von Wollen. Sonst hieße es Wunst." - is anyone able to translate this?
)
With certain limitations I would consider childs paintings as art... but not a pile of rubbish.

Just me, I don't see any difference between a Van Gogh and some $10 flower painting at a swap meet. I guess it's art to someone, given how much some people value it, but it just doesn't do anything for me.
On the other hand, I definitely recognize artistic differences in things of a mechanical nature, such as the design of a car or building, or the way a hand-built piece of furniture has been put together. I guess one person's old gas guzzler is another person's masterpiece.

Thus saith Babelfish:
"Art comes from ability, not from wools. Otherwise it would be called Wunst."
I think I missed the punchline somewhere. Let's see, Konnen (don't know how to do the umlaut) sounds like 'cunning.'

If my very rusty German knowledge serves me right, können is a form of the verb "can" (which implies ability) and wollen is some form of "to want".
That would make more sense than wools.
