You say 'money and expectations' ...like it was a bad thing LOL. I like the sound of Venom Day though.

Enjoying Valentine's day is a function of enjoying who you are with (or without). I liked Valentines Day when I was dating romantic men. It was even okay when I was dating average men who would at least give me one day a year when I could have a flower and a hand to hold. The only times I don't like it are when I am alone or when I am with someone who is very selfish and unwilling to give even a gesture.
It's not really about money. It's a matter of being thoughtful and sweet. I like poems and silly gifts. A compliment and a romantic walk cost nothing, but they can be the best gifts if done right. I had a few exes say the VD is a marketing scam, but they were never romantic or kind any other time of the year either. I think it was just an excuse for being cold and cheap.
Valentine's Day does tend to make me miss romance in my life, but it will pass. I really enjoy being single most of the time. I am old and set in my ways. Any guy who would date me now would have to be romantic and something of a saint. I have my own money, but ah, those expectations

In New York City, valentines day means clogged streets, seeing all the couples who would normaly not dare show their faces on the street together, and a load of wierd gift balloons.

Tell me about the couples who would not dare show their faces on the street together. Why not? Are they married to other people? Or is there a special police unit that keeps the less attractive amung us off the streets of the Big Apple?

Personally I have as much respect for VD as I do for Xmass. That being: I celebrate Xmass NOT because I give a rats- er- not because I care one way or the other about the holiday but because I have a son whom I would not want to rob of the pagan-ritual-tree decorating hooplah and the gifts that go along with it. He will only apprieciate it with youthful enthusiasm for a short time in the grand scheme anyway.
By the same token when a particular VD rolls around if I am w/ GF at the time I will do something special for her. Generaly though I am an affectionate person day to day who doesnt like social mandates implied into his relationships. It just doesn't feel honest if its obligated. If its not honest it has no biz in the relationship... which is why I suppose that suicides go up during Xmass and breakups during VD.
Oh yeah and BTW: didnt Aerosmith do a song that went something like "Cheney's got a gun..."?

Julie Brown did The Homecoming Queen has Got a Gun, and that works for me too. I've seen a parody of the Aerosmith song with Cheney lyrics, but I can't remember the link. I'm kind of tempted to write a Julie Brown parody, but I'm not sure anyone would get it.

A friend of mine came up with this:
A brief political history of the last 35 years:
Gerald Ford fell down the stairs.
Jimmy Carter was scared to death by a rabbit.
George Bush vomited on a Japanese diplomat.
Dan Quayle spelled "POTATOE"
Bill Clinton gave a speech about "black people and normal people."
Al Gore invented the Internet.
George W. Bush choked on a pretzel.
Dick Cheney shot a lawyer.
