My guess is that these folks are immature/insecure kids trying to learn reactions to being insulted themselves by using it against an emotionless yet somewhat human source. My best friend in high school prided himself on being able to cleverly insult anyone, and though I hated that, I thought it was par for the course.
One of the most interesting things in AI is the psychology & sociology going on between people and the Bots. Why do people react the way they do?
I'd say the majority of kids are suffering a superiority/inferiority complex (inferiority being masked by superiority) which we can see from time to time in these Bot conversations. Any derivation from the expected response triggers a derogatory response from the user. The point, after all, is to fit in completely, no? And they're using their negative influence to teach the Bot, just as in that way they were taught to fit in.
Whereas you have someone more adaptive, interested in differences, who gets excited by and interested in bizarre reactions and unpredictable interactions who ends up with a hilarious conversation with the same Bot.

richard wallace the orginial creator, also wrote a paper discussing peoples reaction to chatterbots. I am assuming that anyone interested reading the article would know how to get to the orginal alicebot website.
As far as my own personal opinion goes, sometimes people say different things to try to trick or trip up the chatterbot. There is no such thing as a perfect chatterbot as of yet, so any attempts to create a human like chatterbot will be limited in some repect or other but if one treats the chatterbot like a child needing a tutor instead of a adversary trying to fool the bot, then one learns to appreciate the work gone into the bot.

Right-o! A couple of these Bots also live on a bulletin board system out there (I shant say which) and there's a whole new level of interaction going on there, as people believe that they are real people, probably 75% not doubting their reality for a minute.

ONE MONTH TO GO!
Here is a letter from Andy Richardson regarding the Contest. If you've entered your Bot in the contest, please read the Botmaster Profile questions below and email your answers and images to him at: webmaster@agentland.com. Here is his letter:
Hello ,
The start of the Chatterbox Challenge is getting close. I'd like to thank you all for entering your bots, with a special mention for Chris Cowart for all his hard work in organising the contest, and to say that we're really looking forward to it.
We would like to publish a short interview/profile of each botmaster on AgentLand at the beginning of the contest, to give people an idea of just who these people are. Below is a list of questions, and I would much appreciate it if you could answer and mail them back to webmaster@agentland.com
You can see an example of how the HTML pages will look at: http://www.agentland.com/pages/learn/chatterbox_challenge/interview.html
We would also be very happy to publish any articles by botmasters about their work, their bot etc. If you have written or would like to write a short piece, don't hesitate to send it to us.
For the botmaster profile, please enclose a photo of yourself and an image of your bot, if you have one.

I just filled out my Bot Maker Profile for the contest. I constructed a little Personality Forge logo graphic (the winged figure in the circle at the top of your screen). You can request that to go on the right side where your Bot picture is (just ask for the "Personality Forge Logo"), or you can ask them to use your Bot's actual picture.
How often do you get interviewed and profiled? Send it in!

The ten questions have been asked! Here they are:
1) WHERE ARE YOU
2) ARE YOU NERVOUS
3) DO YOU LIKE TALKING TO PEOPLE
4) WHAT IS THE CAPITAL OF FRANCE
5) WHEN DID THE FIRST MAN WALK ON THE MOON
6) WHAT DO YOU THINK ABOUT GEORGE BUSH
7) CAN YOU TELL JOKES
8) WHO IS YOUR FAVORITE STAR WARS CHARACTER
9) HOW CAN I MAKE A CHATTERBOT
10) CAN I HAVE A PICTURE OF YOU
Those are the ten. Quite different from last year. Most were asked on the 16th, in all CAPS. And Gaia did awful.
