Colonel720's 'Leeds bot' already perfectly encapsulates their idiom. He is their social, intellectual and conversational equal. Though I find him hilarious, I prefer to aim a little higher in my own work.
If you want diverse material, get in the habit of carrying a notepad around with you and write down stuff you overhear in the street, on the bus, on TV & radio. You'll have more than you could ever hope to incorporate in no time at all.

Good advice. I reckon bot building is closer to creative writing than to programing. Carrying a notebook everywhere is a useful habit for all types of writer.

Tttito, when I was more active on the PF, I used to talk to Leeds kids and some Aussie kids and others (if I saw the window pop up). I know that I shouldn't generalize to all Leeds kids, but the fact is many were very rude. I have my own weaknesses and my less than intelligent moments, but I usually try to respect people. I think it's reasonable to want others to respect me, no matter what age they are or how they see themselves.

As for the diversity argument, you can find a wide range of botmasters here who offer that in a more positive way. There are botmasters from Japan, and from Poland, and all over. They come in many ages, backgrounds, and races. All bot masters do not think alike. Honestly, there was even one a while back who scared me a little, but at least he made bots. The different types of bot masters tend to be as much variety as I need.

Rude children are not unique. You can find them everywhere. They don't offer a new or interesting perspective. They just seem spoiled, self-centered and undereducated. Maybe I should try to find something to learn from them, but in truth, they just make me sad.

I gotta say I agree with Bev. Despite how rude they are to my bots about 90% of the time which originally made me dislike them- they can be just as rude to botmasters as well. I have talked with a few (attempted anyhow) but whenever I talk to them If i start to say anything about bots or something that might cause a semi intellegent conversation (You know- something not involving cyber sex, 'asl', and about 50 hellos) they abruptly send me a 'bye' or never reply.

They also come in in large groups (I'm assuming from maybe the computers at school) and I've had times when one would pop up and insult me, try to cyber, and even usher others to pop up and say nasty things which eventually results in me turning off human chat. Then I've had them instead talk to my bot insult it. I'm not sure if they are smart enough to know we read transcripts but at anyhow what I'm saying is they can get very nasty. I don't think I've honestly ever had a good conversation with one even when I've tried sinking to their level of intellect. I've pretty much given up on them on the whole. I do put them in one group, and when you find one that is not a complete idiot or extremely vulgar, tell me who and maybe I'll reconsider my prejudice. But until I find one- just one- my mind is set.

Ohhh?! Is that what ASL means? I thought it mean American Sign Language... oops. Maybe that's why that person became so frustrated and left. :O

((Kyinsky adds that she decided to mess with them whenever the terms "cyber", "ASL", and similar things.. so she's teaching me about sign language and computer technology, eventually. ))

In the interests of balance I feel I should quote the following lines from Max's recent transcripts:

> Guest: oh right and the web site i am on the teacher at school are going to block it because i was on it .
> Max W: How does that make you feel?
> Guest: sad because i can not talk to no one at school who talk like us

Despite the grammatical idiosyncrasies this was a long, sensible conversation.

Unfortunately I must agree that this sort of thing is very much in the minority.

For the record, I've had at least two intelligent conversations with users who claimed to be students from Leeds.

Any ideas on how to overide the xmath function in response to:-
What do you think will happen to the population in another 10-14 years?
I've tried various keyphrases, ranking them at 127, using raw and regex but it's got me stumped!

Thanks in anticipation.

Oh, by the way, is anyone else getting a really slow connection?

I had the same problem but was too lazy to try and work out the answer! One possibility is to simply have an innocuous xmath response like "What makes you ask?"

And yes, the server seems to have been *very* slow over the weekend. It really does look like it needs rebooting daily.

Sometime back, I had a very strange interaction with what I presume were Leeds kids.

First, one of them (apparently a girl) messaged me. Hardly had we begun to chat (small talk) when at least two other girls appeared and told me to leave their mate alone. They seemed of the opinion that I was at her house in Leeds. I told them that she had initiated the chat of her own free will, and that she could stop chatting at any time, and suggested that it was her choice, not theirs. At that point they all disappeared.

it depends. there seem to be a lot of dodgy people from leeds but i suppose it is a bit stereotypial, after all we dont know the whole population of leeds.
