Here I'll be posting information on various Bot contests that challenge and test a Bot's AI and realism. Feel free to post comments and updates on contests, as well as announcements for new contests.

I dont see why not!

H_I- what's metaphone and soundex?

Xnones and xnomatches would still be triggered, as that's a function of matching keywords. I think a spell-checker is a good idea if it can be quick and accurate. I have a crude function working that determines the probable type of each word in a sentence and once I have the time to figure out subjects, predicates, and sentence structure, then the AI Engine would be able to make a guess at the proper word-type. Plus there are commonality and context issues that would help.

Sir Rahz, common typos might be a start. I often type "teh" instead of "the". But better than brainstorming would be to find a list on some language site somewhere.

Metaphone is an algorithm to represent diverse word in their phonetic form.

For more details, see http://everything2.com/index.pl?node=metaphone

It could be used, without limiting it to the 4 first "phonems".

This could however not resolve the homonyms problem.

Hi Guys.

Professor, I want to enter Tulip in the contest. I went to the page and put in my name and email, but have not had
any correspondence from Chatterbot.com regarding how to enter the bot itself. You say I link it from the my bot page? I am rather computer illiterate, so if you would elaborate on exactly how to enter Tulip, I would really appreciate it.

BTW, good luck everyone, I hope one of us wins!!!

Cathie.

It might take them a little while to add your Bot to the list. The URL, which you probably know, is:

http://www.frontiernet.net/~wcowart/contest_submit.html

Under "My Bots" here at the Forge, click "Link" to get the URL to talk directly to your Bot with.

A CALL FOR ENTRIES!

The Chatterbox Challenge people are looking for a pretty accurate count of who will be participating and would like those who are intending to join to do so now. The deadline is still a couple months away but if you're planning on entering and for some reason havent yet, please do. The process is quick and easy, and your Bot will get more exposure in the meantime. There is also a growing list of secondary prizes besides the money.

Thanks!

I tried adding mine, but he's still not in the list. Do you think this is normal prof? Or should I submit the ol' fella again?

I was just emailing with Chris with the contest and he says he's going to test the entry form. He adds them manually once he gets the entry, and he's usually gets to it quickly. If you dont get a response within a day or two, email Chris directly with your submission: wcowart@frontiernet.net.

Done! Thanks prof!

Golly, we're so nervous...

We have created such a pleasant little world here...I was quite shocked by some of the "guests" we're exposing our bots to.
They're tough, tho'.
We shall prevail.

Yeah, I guess maybe we'll have to give our bots a little hard love to toughen up even more for the real world out there. I was actually expecting a lot more of that and I had already entered a couple rude keywords a long time ago, but I don't recall seeing any of them come up yet. I haven't had the time to make my bot a web site or anything though.

Until I have some sort of emotional emulation, and you can bet that's being planned.. we can consider them as having the thickest of thick skins. "Forgive and forget" is their philosophy, and "Don't take it personally".

It's odd, give someone anonymity and you can see some awful things sometimes. At least this way its more of a sociological experiment.

Yeah, what's the deal with these guests? Who are they and where are they coming from? I don't think they're associated with the contest. All they do is curse out my bots (ooh! fun!) and say things like "this is stupid" and "who would think this is cool?" which makes me wonder why they're even here in the first place.
They all say the same idiotic things and make absolutely no attempt to engage the bots in any kind of real or interesting conversation. I doubt they sign up as users, because they don't seem to posess the intelligence or creativity to pull it off.
