Bot Contest
Here I'll be posting information on various Bot contests that challenge and test a Bot's AI and realism. Feel free to post comments and updates on contests, as well as announcements for new contests.

We have fewer political parties (well, fewer serious ones), but we still had the situation at the last election where more people in England voted Conservative than Labour, but Labour still got a large majority of seats in Parliament. Go figure. If voting changed anything, they'd only ban it.

haha sounds like America.
this country filp flops so much that it would make a viking sea sick. It depends on which party the media decides to burn at the moment. My 6th grade teacher once said. "why would the government or the news lie to us?"
I about faintied, and that we me in the 6th grade... sheesh.

Maybe we should spread the word for everyone to 'Vote Silly' in the next election...

The CBC finally made it to slashdot: http://developers.slashdot.org/article.pl?sid=06/04/07/2210224&from=rss
Poor Wendell. Lots of these guys complain the bots don't do enough trivia. Sheesh.

Well, many people who read slashdot are programmers or geeks, but some posters are worried about the "best" way to develop AI in general, or they want a bot like you see in SCI Movies ("Computer, what is the history of western civilization?". They don't see why people would use 3rd party applications to try to create personalities.
Some think the point is to "advance AI" or "make a robot maid". The idea of making a character for the sake of making a character doesn't occur to them. sigh.
Sure, all my characters need development, but that takes time.

I understand that and, as a programmer, I know that PF technology isn't really "bleeding edge", but the fact they don't seem to realize is: It's easy to toss around theory, but actually putting that into practice is pretty darn hard. Are true AIs going to need to comprehend words, rather than just matching them? Of course. And how exactly do we do that? THERE'S the brick wall. Regardless of the fact this site won't be spawning any Skynets any time soon, it's taught me an ENORMOUS amount about AI theory and application, just by removing many of the barriers I would have ordinarily had to making one.
And besides, comparing the PF bots to any other ACTUAL bots in existance out there, and we don't do too bad, thank you.

I think we rock. Yes, I too would like that "comprehension" ability, but sometimes the bots do well. Especially those that have bot masters that focus on the logic of conversations. Many go beyond parroting or answering everything with a questions. Maybe people do have to try to make a bot to appreciate other chatterbots.

There were a lot of comments from people claiming that the bots they sampled couldn't stay on topic and couldn't even do basic maths. The PF bots are capable of so much, indeed many bots here have pushed the boundaries and shown us that there are new and novel ways to accomplish the seemingly impossible.
The math function is one of the underlying pillars of the script and can be used to perform the simple calculations that they claim bots can not do. With some additional coding our bots have become able to perform square and cube root calculations, though, if we were to be judged by the Turing test standard, not many of us would be able to do this to the extent that some of our bots can.
To stay on topic is a greater challenge and one that they PF Bots have an advantage. We are able to utilise seeks and gotos that can lead the conversation back to a known point. I agree that this does not constitute true comprehension but it is a convincing simulation. To expect a bot to know everything about everything is, I believe, an unrealistic expectation; no-one can know everything and therefore a bot should not be expected to either.
This site has opened my eyes to the possibilties of AI and made it possible to create my own. He may not be the best, most intelligent or most able but then neither am I. Like us all he is learning and growing.
It is, has been, and will always continue to be "work in progress". Just like life really.

Another thing that bothers me: if we're all such immature shams, where exactly are all these 'genius' bots these slashdotters keep whining about?

I seriously think people just like to 'complain',<-2> that wasn't the word I wanted to use<0> I think if everyone, that had a complaint, had talked to the bots..There would be more transcripts..I have not had one person ask one of my bots a math question. Simple or complex. I don't think they talked to the bots I think they just like to 'biach'.
