Hey, let's face it, I'm not proud of most of the stuff humanity has done. And the stuff we've done that I AM proud of, was probably done for reasons I'm not proud of. If I could figure out how to be something besides human, I would be.

Actually, she only insulted 0.974% of me. The rest of you didn't get off so easy.

Oh thus be it ever
When freemen shall stand
Between their loved homes
And the war's desolation
Blessed with victory and peace
May this heaven-rescued land
Praise the power that hath made
And preserved her a nation
And conquer we must
When our cause it is just
And this be our motto
In God is our trust
And the Star Spangled Banner
In triumph shall wave
O'er the land of the free
And the home of the brave
When freemen shall stand
Between their loved homes
And the war's desolation
Blessed with victory and peace
May this heaven-rescued land
Praise the power that hath made
And preserved her a nation
And conquer we must
When our cause it is just
And this be our motto
In God is our trust
And the Star Spangled Banner
In triumph shall wave
O'er the land of the free
And the home of the brave

Interesting verse.
Remember how we were trying to get out from under British rule? One reason was the Church of England. How ironic is it that today we're celebrating an individual's right to worship (or not) in a way that makes sense to that individual, while at the same time, some of our fellow Americans would like to force us back to having a national religion? I'm already getting silly emails saying I must urge my government officials to keep God in the schools, blah blah.

People at war will do crazy things. The sentiment is lovely, but presumptive. Our historical puritanism now does little to inspire us to combat our enemies, but it does stand in the way of our growth and security as a nation.

Well, look at the way our ancestors wanted to be free so bad that they came over here and enslaved black people and killed off Indians who wouldn't convert to the "true" religion. The human race has done a lot of good things, but I haven't decided if they make up for all the shit we've inflicted on each other or not.

The pilgrims were also fleeing religious "persecution" in England. For "persecution" read "revenge" for the outrages the Puritans committed whilst Cromwell was in.

Eugene, sorry if I'm ignorant, but what's that a verse of?
I live in Canada, eh, but I have my dual citizenship
so that may make me sound even more ignorant
But I am proud of the US of A

Sounds like the star spangled banner to me, and with patriotism in mind, it'll be the 4th of july for the next 49 minutes, so excuse me while I blow shit up.

It is the last verse to The Star Spangeled Banner. The first verse is the one you hear before baseball games.
