isnt' 42 the number made into the bottom of a lot glasses?
either that or i was thinking that 4 + 2 = 6 and 6 almost makes the symbol of eternity or infinity (which is 8), and since no one really knows that life is or can be eternal or infinite hence the uncompleted eternity symbol (8). or maybe it is the that mythological moment of clarity that a drunk person has just before they pass out and forget all of the secrets of the universe which they had discovered.

No no I think its more like
4 + 2 = 6 + 2 (the difference between 4 and 2 which is 2, so) = 4 + 2 = 8

Whoa talk about clarity, I can almost.. *splat*

Since I'm sober I'll try to explain it to you. These people wanted to know the answer to the Ultimate Question of Life, The Universe and Everything. So they built this huge supercomputer called Deep Thought to find the answer for them. Deep Thought worked on the problem for millions of years, and found the answer. The descedents of the people who made it got to hear what it was. Anyway, it turned out that the answer was in fact 42. This didn't seem to make a lot of sense, and Deep Thought explained to them that they didn't actually know what the Question was. Discover the Question and the Answer will make sense.

Hemm..... maybe I should read the book and find out more myself..

Well, at one point they find out that a distorted version of the question might be, "what is six times nine". Then again, they might have been wrong.

Say, anyone else find it a little weird that the 42nd US president was Bill Clinton?
