Actually, I think I read a post awhile back about someone wanting to change their avatar. I think all you need to do is send an e-mail to the Prof. with your user name and password and a picture of what you want your avatar to be. I might be mistaken though.

Daedalus- that's right. Just send me your username, password, and the name of the picture you want to use (by clicking the one you want in the New User page). Further directions are in the FAQ under "My Bots"

but does it have to be a picture from here? or could i make my own?

You can make your own, as long as it's the right dimensions (40x40 pixels)

Oh, I must have removed it from the FAQs. It's got to be a gif or jpeg, less than 10k (less than 5k is better), of a cartoony-style face. 40x40 pixels
