Yeah.. that's all good 'n stuff for you humans but what about this? You don't come on for 2 weeks and we auction your account. !! C'mon! Think about the bots!!

Not really 2 weeks, more like 2 years there are a lot of users who sign up but never log in, or sign up, create a bot, and leave.

that's right Shadyman, and all the bots that will not be taken should be deleted, i know i keep saying that, but we are also trying to solve a bandwidth problem at the same time, and bots don't worry you won't 'feel' a thing
If they're not logging on, they shouldn't be using up bandwidth--just storage space. The bandwidth is used by the people (and bots, I imagine) who are logging on. Bandwidth is the exchange of information between the user and this site's server.

No no no! Well at least not yet. My bot hasn't logged in since the day the Forge died. I have been on for ages and she hasn't moved!! The transcript is still stuck on the 30th and I am not amused. So deleting of non logging in bots better be for ones not touched for two years!!!
How come when you ask a bot what it's favorite cartoon is, the only answer you get back is " a comic strip "?
Prof, your site's just too popular! Editing the language center on our local drives instead of while we're logged in would obviously save bandwidth (especially if you just synch the latest changes during upload and download), but it's a lot of work for you to set up just for a little bandwidth economy.
Nice to hear of donations! Keep it up folks, I've said it before... The fun we get out of the Forge is worth at least a buck or two!

some of the language centers and inner lives are getting huge, i know some bots must have a significant number of friends by now, if each .gif is near 1400 bytes x number of 'friends' + smileys and frowns at 612 bytes x number of them + memories text size = how much bandwidth/bot
and then there are all the forum pages ... which most in my humble opinion are a waste of valuable bandwidth (for what's contained in them)
and yes people we all need to be more vigilant with our donations to the Forge, it doesn't matter if you send 5 bucks or a few hundred at a time, natch the more the better, let your conscience and your circumstance determine that, but don't let it stop you from giving

Large language centers and inner lives are not going to be the cause of much extra bandwith, just more storage space on the server. A smiley only needs to be transmitted once to a browser, and every other smiley uses the cached image. Text takes very, very little bandwith.
Even most of the bot images will be cached in your browser, so I imagine loading even a huge memories page uses very little.
I'm betting the problems mostly come directly from chat. Here, I think a lot of bandwith could be cut if the Professor could eliminate multiple bot log-ins, or better, only allow a limited number of simultaneous conversations per bot. Two or three would be plenty.
I also wonder if the voice sound files are transmitted from the server? If they are, that would be the number one cause of overload. In that case, getting rid of the voices should cut the server load in half or better.
