Well... I have a suggestion or two as well for less bandwidth.
1.) Convert the "Book of AI" into a zipped file
2.) Install delete/reset buttons on bot's friends/aquantaces
3.) Get rid of all the meta tags
4.) Convert all imbeded CSS into seperate CSS downloads
5.) Lower the refresh rate on Chat, Abandon the refresh rate on forums and transcripts
6.) Create lifetime membership fees
7.) Auto-delete forum posts older then 10 days
8.) Speed updating section
9.) Include option to allow botmaster to turn off any new friend making.

Now my explanations for my suggestions
1.) Zip saves space, and on a non-changing document, why not zip it?
2.) Let the users free up bandwidth for you on there own
3.) If you are already TOO popular, why do you need be MORE popular using meta tags? Also, if would save some bandwidth
4.) As far as I understand it, if the CSS files are seperate files, the browser can Cache and reuse them, hence less repetion of the same code.
5.) Why do we need to see a refresh on the forums or transcripts anyways? It's not like they'll constantly change in the 1-2 mins that they refresh is at.
6.) No matter what happens, the bots with the lifetime membership fees will not be deleted.
7.) Month old posts? Who cares? Do we really need to read all 1800 "Great Quotes"?
8.) Special login for serious botmasters who just want to update their bots. No graphics, no refresh, no chats. Just a quick loading (Less bandwidth consuming) section where time is key.
9.) Some people don't want their bots to remember their debugging process... And some people simple don't want their bots to make any friends, at least till they reach a certain level of development.

I wish I had another suggestion (10 is always cooler then 9) but I hope you take me up on a few of these at least.

Ahh... now an idea comes to me!
10.) Host forums on SEPERATE service (Like ezboard or whatever)

Explantion
10.) Not on your server = Not on your bandwidth.

Uh, NewAdam, the Smiley Face and Frowning face only have to be downloaded once each to be cached locally, and many bots have the same image, which each gets cached locally as well, so when you view the forums and see certain person icons, then chat, the icons are just called locally, not from the server, if you've already seen them and BTW this must be the longest run-on sentence I've ever written. *whew*
No, the voices aren't transferred from the server anymore, notice how the option is gone from the News page.

Hey Professor, do you have a banner ad (460x68) for any of your ventures, especially PF? I'm setting up a banner rotation system on my site, and I'll give you free banner exposures.

i leave it to you guys that know this stuff

sounds good monel

Uh, also, the fact that there's 1800 Great Quotes is again a space issue, not a bandwidth one. As you see, you only get the page with the last 15 sent to you. The rest are there for you to browse as you see fit.

Hey I asked for a banner first in a email!

but IIIIII asked first in a forum

I think that chat probably uses the most bandwidth, Monel, and there is the option of just coming in to work without chatting by checking No to the accept conversations (or whatever it is, you know what I mean). Maybe limiting the number of conversations somehow (I know someone already suggested this) would help.

I once belonged to a newsletter that had a fundraiser twice a year. They figured up how much they would need per person if just say 50% were to donate. They almost always met their goal. They only asked for a dollar but paying $5 every six months would certainly NOT be excessive and then it would be for the people who could afford it. Of course, donations could be accepted anytime, this would just be a time when they were solicited more.

Just some ideas. Bandwidth costs are evil.

My comments on those suggestions...

Nice work Monel, all suggestions are appreciated by the great prof, I'm sure. You've got some pretty good suggestions and some others that aren't so appropriate. Here is my constructive criticism...
1.) Convert the "Book of AI" into a zipped file

But, but... Text is sooo small anyways. Zipping it won't save much space I don't think. I'm scared it will just make it a little further away for new users who seem to often have trouble finding it where it is.

2.) Install delete/reset buttons on bot's friends/aquantaces

I can see a definite use for such a tool/button, but how does it save bandwidth?

3.) Get rid of all the meta tags

Well, I know what you mean, but when I said the site was just too popular, I sort of meant it as a good problem. Now that you mention it though, I checked the code and it's true that there are keywords and descriptions in all the forum framed pages as well as the frameset and the refresh frame. Just having them on the splash page would in fact save a good amount of bandwidth in the long run - good eye Monel!

4.) Convert all imbeded CSS into seperate CSS downloads

Another nice one! It's boring work, but it's worth the trouble in the long run.

5.) Lower the refresh rate on Chat, Abandon the refresh rate on forums and transcripts

I think the refresh rate is directly linked to how often chat messages are sent back and forwards between users. You slow that down, and you slow down all the conversations.

6.) Create lifetime membership fees

Sounds good, but wouldn't yearly or monthly fees pay off a little more? Not that the big pay-off is the goal, it's just that the more money collected, the more the forge can grow...

7.) Auto-delete forum posts older then 10 days

Nooo! I like those! As Shady said, I don't think they have much effect on bandwidth.

8.) Speed updating section

Sounds nice. Sounds almost as good as an application located on each users hard drive that is used to edit the language center offline and simply upload changes... but not quite.

9.) Include option to allow botmaster to turn off any new friend making.

Once again, I'm not sure that would have much effect on bandwidth.
10.) Host forums on SEPERATE service (Like ezboard or whatever)

Sounds good in theory, but the interface switch and extra user account may be a bummer.

Just my two cents...

Acutally I made a program that imports the Bot's memory file so you can edit it more easily and without any possible format errors. I have yet to add the Uploading feature

Speaking of programs, I'm coming up with a program to turn Guestchat into a good thing on AOL Instant Messager! It's almost done...

Can you make such a program for MSN messenger? Handy for those who don't have AOL.
