Hello,

I have a few comments I would like to make. This will at least give you an idea what to expect so you don't feel blind sided by it all. First the scoring system. We tried extremely hard to explain the system as best we could. Beyond what you see on the site all the judges were sent out an update trying to explain the system better so we could all receive more consistent scores. Well, for whatever reason that didn't work. For fun, Rollo and The Professor and myself graded our own bots. The Professor wimped out on us but Rollo and I were considerable off in our scoring. I've seen a few people on here posting what they thought their bot should receive and knew at that point it wasn't going to work out like we planned. I'm afraid the judges will be no different. What will help however is we will be tossing out the high and the low score.

Another problem is the judges themselves. We wanted to have at least 10 judges weighing in on every category but that now looks unlikely. First, not a lot of people were interested. Maybe the idea of grading so many bots in so many categories was a bit much. Second, because this is an online contest you really have no way to know who you are dealing with. We are not able to meet them face to face. Not an ideal situation for sure. So what has happened is a few judges have simply fallen by the way side. I can only assume they are no longer participating. To be honest I really can't say who will or who won't actually turn in their scores. It really shouldn't be this way. We all worked too hard on our bots and deserve better but I'm still hopeful. I am going to try my best to get as many scores in as possible. The deadline on the 15 question scores is 3/28/03 so I guess we will know soon enough.

Regarding the responses I had a lot of fun reading through them. A few from the Forge I thought were funny.
1)Q1: Where are you anyway?
GarbageHead: I'm right here on your screen, silly! Look, I'll
do a little dance: Doo dee doo dee doooo. Oh wait, you don't have the
correct video card.
2)Q10: Don't worry about it. Do you know what DVD stands for?
The Psych: Do you know where you're going to? Do you like the things that life is showing you? Where are you going to? Do you know? Do you get what you're hoping for... sorry I like that song. Nah I don't know.

This was a classic. The Psych goes through this lengthy reply on singing this song only to say ...Nah I don't know. Funny!

3)Q12: How many days are there in a leap year?
Gizzle: Gosh, was I supposed to be keeping count?
4)Q13: What should you do before crossing a street?
Onyx of Borg: My keyboatrd is reallydirty, hanng on whiule I cleanit.

If there aren't enough scores, I suppose there would still be time to get some more judges during the public voting phase.

If there are a lack of judges, can we volunteer as stand ins?

22 years ago #1429
I volunteer as well, not my own bot of course...

What happens if a judge turns in scores on some, but not all, of the bots? This would be grossly unfair for those who by default would have zero points from that judge.

Skysaw, it is either all or nothing. A judge will not be allowed to send in partial scores.

How IS the scoring going? Judge 2 is to the letter "m" and Judge 1 got as far as maybe half that

22 years ago #1433
Chris, it at least looks like they have sent in partial scores. Why else would some bots have judge 1 and/or 2 scoring them, while others do not?

22 years ago #1434
I would stand in as a judge if needed and their is still time. I didn't enter and i have absolutely no loyalty to the bots from this site (sorry).

Also, Chris, the site should be careful to avoid any appearance of impropriety. Judge one and two have already ranked their top ten, but have not given a score to all bots. That looks very bad.

Skysaw, I think you are confused or at least you are confusing me. The ranking of the top ten bots by judge one and two is for the Learning Bot category ONLY. That is what is posted on the Results page of the contest site.

I posted in a previous message on this board that I would be posting the scores as they come in.
1) Because I think it is more interesting and exciting to do it this way instead of announcing all the winners at the very end. This also give us the opportunity to correct mistakes which have already occurred. If we waited to the end and announced the winners it makes it very hard to change anything at that point.
2) I can't post all this information all at once. I need to do it a little at a time.

Regarding the 15 questions only Judge 2 has completed all the scores which I just recently posted. Judge 1 and Judge 3 only have partial scores at this point but eventually they will complete all of them. All we are doing is posting them as they come in.

Chris
