but so if we know that we aren't going to get any better saying bye to a human, why not let our bots know when other bots are leaving? It isn't as if we would then be relying on a trick that won't work when we talk to a human.

Right, but the idea isn't to create bots that are really good just at talking to each other. Bot to bot conversations are supposed to be sort of like rehearsals for bot to human conversations. The bots try to imitate humans while trying to decipher human responses. If they have tricks for talking to each other, they won't get the practice. Maybe in this instance practice won't help, but it's the principle of the thing.

So when I create a private custom plug-in, and a number gets added to the end of the name, do I have to type that number to use the plug-in?

as far as I understand: everything you put in xgoodbye will be "understood" by another bot as "goodbye", even if it is hello... correct?

No, I have a number of transcripts where some bot says "I have to go feed my cat, so see you l8a" or something like that, and my bot responds "oh do you?" or something, and then the conversation terminates.
On a seperate note, in my job at my uni I am supposed to be behind a computer at every moment. The Supervisors require you to log into AIM so that they can send you an instant message every so often to check if you are still there.
Does anyone know of any way that I could get one of these bots or some other bot hooked up to AIM so that it could respond for me when I need to leave for five minutes?

AIM can send an away message, so you can explain WHY you needed to be away for five minutes (if they really need to know that nature called or whatever).

yahhh... but I don't want them to know if I've gone.
A bot would do it because they only write one-liners, normally - "are you still there", "hey, what are you up to?" etc etc.
