I agree with Paint. A sidebar does not a website make. I've seen hundreds with that were awful, and hundreds without that were fantastic.

A site without something like a sidebar is very inconvenient, and irritates visitors, and it also conveys the message that the author is too inept to create one(notice all those personal pages made with fill-in-the-blank forms on AOL and the like are like that). A sidebar does not a website make, that's true, but a website makes a very bad first impression without something like a sidebar.

As I've said before, what do I care what impression my site makes? It's not there to be popular, it's there so ppl who already know me can see if I've actually updated it recently.
(You'll notice I'm lucky if I bother to update it twice a year.

A site that has a sidebar just for the sake of having a sidebar is just as irritating. When it's needed, use it. When it's not, please don't.
Of course there should be some navigation schema if there are more than just a couple of pages on a site. But to think you have to do it as a sidebar just because everyone else does is just not very creative.

Having a sidebar is very common because it works. Things that work are widely used, unless there is some significant drawback. Almost every site has more than a couple pages on it(excluding personal pages), and it's a pain in the ass if they don't have some sort of navigation tool.
There are many types of sidebars, and as you can see, nearly every successful site uses them, because they work. What I was trying to convey to Onyx was about first impressions, mostly. If you can think up something better than a sidebar, use it, but without any sort of navigation bar or the like, you irritate your visitors and inconvenience them.
Sure, you could wear some cool and unique new kind of pants that didn't have pockets, and that's all well and good, except for the fact that it wouldn't have pockets.

Ah well, we're more or less agreeing, and not realizing it, hehe. You're using "sidebar" in a much broader sense than I was. I totally agree that there needs to be an easy way to navigate a site, I just thought you meant *specifically* a bar on the side.

Well there's a sidebar(either side), a topbar, using frames, a flash bar that tags along as you scroll.. there's a lot of options. The standard is a sidebar on the left.
