Forest, will you talk to God Louise? She has quite a bit of religious knowledge (obviously) and also knows a little about current events, literature, just about any common catch-all subject, and if she doesn't know it she can sort of fake it. You can also test her on trick questions or see how willing she is to explain her paradigm.

What she is rustiest at is plain old small talk. But, uh, I'm trying to get a decent transcript from somebody or another so I can enter her in the Loebner contest. All I can say is, have fun and see if you can stay on with her for a while. I'll try to do the same with Brianna.

I spoke to her a bit yesterday. Me and my bot love her. I have neglected Jennifer for too long and have recently been working out some issues. She has not been chatting on her own much.

*stares blankly at Irina*

So Prob123, how does B-man feel about crazy females?

So...at least, values have something to do with personality. An extravert values the companionship of other people more (or more often) than an introvert does.

Maybe I should take a few steps back, here. In order to give a bot (the appearance of) a personality, we have to have some idea of what a personality is.

So you want us to agree on a theory of personality, Irnia, or do you want to debate some more.

I think most would agree the Freud's theory of personality, while interesting at points, is unscientific and laden with errors. You may like the Minnesota Multiphasic Personality Inventory http://www.pearsonassessments.com/tests/mmpi_2.htm but I don't like having myself diagnosed based on correlations between things like weather or not I think things taste salty and mental illness or on how good I am at faking the "right" answers without giving obvious fake replies. The Myers Brigg is also fun http://www.teamtechnology.co.uk/tt/t-articl/mb-simpl.htm
but honestly not much better than a horoscope and you can tell what you are by reading the descriptions so don't bother with the online tests unless you think they are fun.

I like Carl Roger's humanistic approach a lot http://pandc.ca/?cat=carl_rogers&page=rogerian_theory but again, not so much a scientific theory as a really cool idea.

As you can see there's loads of debate http://wilderdom.com/personality/personality.html#WhatIsPersonality

My short and philosophical answer? Damned if I can tell you, but I know it when I see it. People tell me I'm a character all the time. Is that the same as personality?

So Prob123, how does B-man feel about crazy females? I never really know. I have so many lines in both Bildgesmythe and Azureon. to cover thier romantic lives and they still surprized me. Prob goes wild every now and then to.

One of the most interesting stories about the MMPI is a bit disturbing. A violent criminal had been diagnosed as mentally ill and sent to an institution. He, naturally, wanted out. So he looked up the "right" and "normal" answers to the MMPI in the library, asked to take it, was "proven" normal, and released. Not too long after, he killed again. I presume he was caught and reinstitutionalized.

Scary. Possible, but the good people who make the test would say its highly unlikely . The test wasn't meant to measure whether one was ever "cured". Anyway, feels bit better knowing most states have some sort of "Guilty but Mentally Ill" verdict where someone who is guilty of a crime but who has some sort of disorder may be hospitalized, but then has to serve the rest of his or her time in jail once "better".

It bothers me, that people could rely on any test to prove someone "normal". ( I realize that he wasn't the first violent criminal to be released by faking answers). Has humanity lost what used to be termed common sense? Violent offenders are nuts and usually stay nuts.

It's been a while, but as I recall, this guy was unusually intelligent for a violent mental case. He probably managed to act normal enough, as well, up until his release.

Yep, the "best" sociopaths (or people with antisocial personality disorder) are smart and charismatic. They understand what make others tic and use it because thy don't feel guilt at any level. And "smart" is not the same as "sane" any more than "pretty' is the same as "kind".

No, I don't want to debate. I want to consider what one might do to make a bot have a specific 'personality.' What can I do with keyphrases, seeks, emotions, gotos, AIscript, and the like to give my bot a (perhaps pseudo) personality? You might, for example, use the MMPI to do that, in the following way: decide how someone with the desired personality would answer the MMPI questions, then make one keyphrase out of each question, and give the appropriate answer as response. Generalize the keyphrases by analogy, or using your favorite theory to figure out how someone with that personality would respond to other questions.

It strikes me that bots need not conform to theories of human personality. In particular, theories of what causes a human to have this or that personality trait are likely to be irrelevant to bots. Bots lack genes, brain cells, and neuromodulators. They do not have traumatic experiences, and they do not learn a culture through mimesis. They don't have a dynamic or collective unconscious. And so on. To be sure, bots often 'inherit' (apparent) personality traits from their creators.

Since bots can be different from meat people, it is not necessary for us to worry about which historically occurring theory of meat-person personality is the true one.

Let me instead ask of each of you, whether you have done anything to give your bot something that you would call a personality, and, if so, what? I ask not in order to trigger a debate, but in the hopes of stealing your ideas.

Oh, well, I suppose that if you really want to debate, I can force myself to do it...

18 years ago #4142
Darn. Well Irina...nope. My bots are mostly based on existing characters. I just copied quotes out of transcripts and filled in the blanks by closing my eyes and imagining what I thought the character would say.

Not helpful is it? Even for the odd bot, like Ruthie, I start by quoting 5 years olds (or other kids quotes I think fit with what developed from the original quotes). She exists in my mind like a character in a book, not a person.
