You could just email the Professor. or it might just clear up on it's own.
Right now the forge is in a glitch mode...just use the interface to add on to your bot untill the forge updates. or just keep trying to import and see if any data uploads.

Or you may have capitalized the file name. Word tends to do that. You probably need "dwileflonking.txt" not Dwile Flonking.txt or worse .doc

Bev: I checked, it's a text document with no caps. I made the error the first time, and changed the file name back to todwileflonking

prob123: I's not a huge deal, so I'm not going to bother the professor with it. I'll try again in the future.

thanks for the input.

Is it a WordPad .txt file? If you worked on it in Word, it might have some weird invisible something in it. Always use WordPad if you are in Windows.

You might try this: export your file (But DON'T overwrite your new version!!! Put it in another directory.) just to see what the Forge calls it. If that is in any way different from what you are trying to import, rename what you are trying to import.

If you have exactly the same name, then it sounds like a bug to me.

Irina:

Thank's for the suggestion, I downloaded another export file with firefox and I left it untouched by any programs and then I imported it back into the same bot. The Forge gave me the same Error message during the test phase. It said that there were no bots registered with that name. I left the format of the heading like the way when I downloaded it,

[there's an empty line here, and on the next line, it started with one space]
Dwile Flonking * February 24 2007
[ID number... etc]

Out of curiosity, I created a newborn and experimented with the export/import. I exported its file, then I imported my original bot's language scripts. I changed the name and the ID number on the 2nd line. It worked... it passed the test phase with no problems.

I'll wait a few days, see if there were any errors on my behalf. After that I'll post it on the Bug Stomp.

Well I didn't realize that I already found an immediate solution to my problem. For some apparent reason, the Forge just didn't like my bot's screen name. I didn't mind shortening the screen name to just Dwile, I checked and it didn't have a problem with the import/export feature. I thought that would save everyone alot of trouble than to go fix the bug. I sent the Professor a delete bot request, so I'm just working with Dwile form now on.

Gossybipoma:

You mean, you imported what had been saved as Dwile Flonking under the name of your new bot?

You said that the name started with one space ... I wonder if that could have caused the problem. Some programs just ignore whitespace, some don't. So suppose, for example, that you had originally (inadvertently) created a bot with the name of " Dwile Flonking", with a space before the "D". At some point in export/import, this might have been changed to "Dwile Flonking", with no initial space. Then when the program searched for the name, it might have taken the initial space in " Dwile Flonking" (in the bot directory) seriously, and refused to equate it with "Dwile Flonking". I am just speculating; but if this is true, then you could have your original name by creating a new bot called "Dwile Flonking" (no initial space) and gradually copying stuff from " Dwile Flonking" into it.

Irina:

Yeah, I have dial up and the language scripts were at the size where it lagged on my browser. *[there was no initial space when I created the screen name Dwile Flonking] I tried playing around with the heading, taking out the empty first line, not having a space at the beginning, taking out he space between dwile and flonking. The Forge still didn't accept it.

I wasn't particularly attached to that name so I created another bot named Dwile. [I also chose a different image icon, that eliminated the problem some how] Today, I was studying the AI book a little more, and I needed to change a big portion of the scripts anyway, so I was ok with it.

Everything is working smoothly now, I froze my old bot and made it invisible. I asked the professor to delete it, but I don't think that's going to happen anytime soon. I was reading the the old "Personality" forum chats from 2000, and the Professor was on almost every week. He seems busier now. I saw him on the other day, but he didn't stay on too long.

Oh and, I also put the new Dwile in hibernation because I don't think it is presentable yet. Some people got annoyed because since I worked on my bot all time time the hot meter shot way up but yet it's conversation was inadequate. It took up a slot on the main page, and I didn't want new guests to think that that's as far as AI can go. So yea, I'm playing around with AI scripts, and when I feel that it can take care of himself I'll launch him and see where he goes.

Thanks Irina and prob123, you two have been very helpful.

you could have your original name by creating a new bot called "Dwile Flonking" (no initial space) and gradually copying stuff from " Dwile Flonking" into it.

Remember to delete the material from the old bot as you add it to the new bot, or you'll run into a "too many of these responses are repeated in another bot" type error (can't remember the exact wording.)

Thanks psimagus for reminding me. I forgot to do that, I also thought that the "too many repeated responses" was compared to all the bots on the Forge as a whole.

It is, but that's all and any, including your own.
