maybe I don't see them because I have IP security off most of the time? Then again my OS is such a mess, smeared over 2 1/2 hard disks, that they might be hiding from me in a partition I've forgotten about
But spyware's my bet - and if you're not extremely vigilant, it can get in through entirely unsolicited emails, even if you never visit a website in your life. So I''d advise everyone to scan regularly and check your anti-virus/spyware software's up-to-date.

Just go to control panel, internet options, find the little box that says delete cookies...poof they are gone. You should do that after every internet use.

They are only tracking cookies, to keep track of you bot building, they do no harm.

I don't think the PF uses cookies, does it? I usually browse them before I delete (it's good advice to delete them now and again, but there are always a few I want to save,) and I've never seen any that appear to be from here.
All the preference settings and the like are stored server-side, so there's no user overhead that I'm aware of.
But cookies aren't the likeliest cause of slowdown - adware and spyware are far likelier to be the cause. If your computer isn't already running anti-spyware software of some sort, I would recommend installing something like Ad-aware. I'd consider it frankly suicidal to go online without it, though your ISP may provide some basic filtering.
You can scan your computer for free athttp://www.pctools.com/spyware-doctor/ to see if you've got an infestation (and if your computer isn't running some sort of anti-spyware software, then statistically this is probable.) The registered version costs, but it not only scans but fixes. And it's a small price to pay to have it running in the background stopping the stuff getting in in the first place.
Or you can find a review of 10 reputable and effective alternatives athttp://anti-spyware-review.toptenreviews.com/

Ah well, mothers are allowed such opinions - it goes with the territory. You should hear what mine says about my bagpipes! And I'm forty. I'm sorry to say they never grow out of it
