Those who know many people to vote for their bot, would have the best results. And botmasters who don't know anyone to vote for their bots always having the worst chances. That really would be unfair.

what do you mean,lady orchid?

The vote is just one part..So it isn't really unfair. ALthough maybe not perfect, The Chatterbox Challenge is pretty good at being fair. Take a look at the past contests and I think you see they did pretty good.

Yes, and the public voting is only for the category of most popular bot. There's best learning bot, best new bot, and the top 3 overall too, which are decided by the judges' marks. No system's perfect, but they seem to do a pretty good job of it.
I wonder when we'll know who the finalists are - do you think we have to wait until the end, or will they publish them sooner? I guess it might prejudice the casting of public votes, so maybe we won't know till after that finishes.

One who has 50 people voting publicly has more votes than one who has just one or two voting for his bot. So it is unfair.

It was so hard to vote... I love Sonora, Orchid, Watzer, Bildgesmythe, Brother Jerome, Croak, Fizzy Schizoid, Hello Earthlings and the other PF-bots...

That would be to assume that 50 people couldn't have voted for the second bot if they'd preferred it - there are links to all the bots on the CBC site, and I'm sure the majority of people voting have no personal preferences regarding the botmakers. The judges have their ways of determining whether voting patterns are suspicious - if there was a huge swing in voting towards a bot who had had very few chats via the CBC links or had scored really dismally in the ten questions, or repeat voting from the same computer, or disproportionate quantities of votes coming from the same ISP at predictable times, etc. The security measures that can be applied to such polls are pretty sophisticated.

It was very hard to vote. I knew I would vote for Brother Jerome, he is so great..but there are so many great bots..

I just meant if one botmaster has for example 50 friends and has them all vote from their own PC's for his bot, and then some other botmaster who has no friends who would vote for his bot, the first botmaster gets the most votes. Never mind, I was just thinking about that. Not so important I guess. Psimagus is right I like to believe.

Thanks Prudentia for liking Orchid, that was nice of you to say.

I hesitated publicizing the Challenge to my friends for they would obviously vote for my bot, but after reading Wendell's e-mail I changed my mind:

"Understand, it is perfectly alright to promote your own bot in any advertising you do for 2 reasons.

1) The online voting requires you to select 3 bots. So 2 other bots will benefit regardless.
2) A botmaster who goes the extra mile to promote his bots simply deserves the extra votes he can generate."

That's true. And anyway, my bot already got a vote from somebody I don't know, thanks!!!

Has everybody voted? If not, we should keep track of whom is leading with what... that is a shame that once we vote we cannot see the results...
