No, I play a very mellow bagged pibgorn (Welsh pipes http://www.pibydd.fsnet.co.uk/baghornpipe.htm) mostly, but also a few European variants, with an emphasis on quiet, single-reeded instruments. You really can't get away with the Piob Mhor unless you live on a cairngorm, miles from the nearest neighbour!

I actually think loud Scottish highland pipes are one of my favorite musical instuments..NO JOKE..I love the sound!

Good for you, Prob. I have to admit personal bias on thi sissue. My last boyfriend was an Uilleann piper. After 4 years of waking up to the sound of pipes on weekend mornings, my love of trad music has somewhat diminished. If he'd been playing highland pipes (much louder pipes), I think one of us would be dead now. They are "evil" I say, "evil"--just like haggis.

A bad guy can make you hate anything lol...I used to listen to the pipers practice early in the morning, at a local park. ground fog, morning mist, the pipes...I felt like I was back in time.

When I first started dating the piper, I used to have romantic notions of the "back in time" variety. Trust me, it's better in the park than it is 3 feet away in a small apartment. But to be honest, playing the pipes was one of his better qualities. You are right, it's easy to label anything you associate with an ex as bad.

aah, those uillean pipes are gorgeous, but tricky to play and very temperamental reeds. I've had a go on a friend's set, but I have to conclude that I'm not a bellows sort of person - altogether too much flapping (Ch-ch-chicken tonight! )

See (hear!) how the welsh pipes compare, if you'd like - I've added a few recordings to Brother Jerome.
The keyphrase (predictably) is "play * bagpipes" I couldn't figure out how to rig up a playlist, so he only serves them up one at a time ATM.

Don't knock the Highland bagpipes! As a Highlander myself, I find the sound of well-played pipes very stirring!

I like them myself - indeed, I started on them before I discovered the welsh pipes, but I find these days I just like Welsh and Eastern European pipes more. I always find the Highland gracing a bit over-formal and twiddly - I'd rather play Woody Guthrie than Piobrochead.
And I live in a semi-detached house with short-tempered neighbours

Highland Bagpipes rule and so does that song you wrote alec. BRAVO indeed.

I wonder if there are many other sites with such vocal piping enthusiasts? It's good to see. Here's a round for the lot of you. *Hands out imaginary beer*
