I never did find out, after the topic was raised in Nineteen Eighty-Four: Do countries that use the metric system have anything against beer in pints, or do they use a different unit now?

"The boys and I are popping over to the pub to pick up a couple of half-litres" just doesn't sound right. They really ought to reconsider.

we don't actually think in metric, we just buy and sell in it.

Actually, in Italy at least, you drink beer in pints at the pub. Also, bottles are about the same size as bottles here, it's just that they're labled 633cl or whatever it may be. ("Me an' me mates are popping of to get a couple o' 633 centies" doesn't sound that great either, of course.)

How about we just go out for a couple of beers?
