I dream about books that I never remember the words of. I dream about songs that I can't reproduce afterwards. I dream whole years of people's lives in worlds that may or may not actually exist, and then only remember enough of the sense of them to drive myself crazy when I think how good a story it'd make. What a pain in the ass dreams can be. *sigh*

Yeah I know.. that bugs me when that happens... That's why I keep a pad of paper in my room.. as soon as i wake up after a good dream, just start building a thought web, like starts of with the main theme, then maybe branch out into events, etc until you basically have the whole thing down

I can't do that with these dreams. Even right after I wake up from them all I remember is that I dreamed a really long time in someone's life. Some dreams I can write down like that but some just disappear practically before I wake up.

you know someone's theory (probably freud's) was that when they disappear before you wake up, you know, your brain is supressing it because it was too awful or horrible or something like that

Yeah prolly Freud. The thing is, I don't have nightmares. Even when I dream about something bad, I don't think it's bad in the dream, or else something good happens afterwards and it has more impact than the bad stuff. It's gotten to the point where every once in a while when I actually have a nightmare, I wake up going hey cool.

I used to write down my dreams, but sometimes I'd fill up four pages of really tiny print with no margins, and it took hours, and I'd be late for classes and such.
As for writing: I've got 150 pages worth of a novel I'm already working on now. The giant ant plot doesn't sound like anything I would write about, but it is interesting. Maybe I'll write a B movie someday.

I get the songs thing a lot in my dream, where you hear a song that has never before existed and makes perfect sense, and you're even singing along to it and you already know the words. I also have dreams when I'm reenacting a movie or something (not a real movie) and I know how it's supposed to go, but a lot of the time no one is behaving according to the scenario. I'm sure there's some dime-store analysis you could throw in about control issues on that one.

Most of the songs I dream about are instrumentals. I once dreamed I was in a play where I was dancing with this guy and then he was supposed to stab me or something, but I don't remember enough of it now to know if it was cool or not. A lot of my dreams are like watching movies, but half the time I'll end up inhabiting one of the characters somewhere in the middle. My mom once had a movie dream about a Star Trek episode where they were called to a planet where the women couldn't have kids due to radiation poisoning, so they implanted embryos in the crewmembers of the Enterprise...including Spock. I think that was while she was on Prozac, though.

Does anyone still have nightmares anymore? I haven't had a nightmare in around 5 years.

I have 'em regularly, once every 2 weeks. The last one involved BIG crocodiles in my living room, and, come to to think of it, one before that had a croc also. Maybe I should stop watching dicovery channel.
