Seasons

This is a forum or general chit-chat, small talk, a "hey, how ya doing?" and such. Or hell, get crazy deep on something. Whatever you like.

Speaking of taking chances...did everyone read about Sony's use of rootkit digital rights managments on it's CDs? http://www.sysinternals.com/Blog/

It seems you don't have to press an "I accept" button on the EULA for it to install itself, and trying to unistall it can mess up your computer. It makes me kind of glad I don't buy CDs anymore.

iTunes is almost as bad. These days, there's just no (legal) way to get music without letting lord-knows-who onto your machine.

Pffft. Legal? No thank you. I'll take burning stuff from my friends CD collections and off file-sharing networks any day.

While annoying, what's to stop me from simply disabling auto-play (which I do have off by default, because I find it irritating as a general thing)?

Nothing should stop you from disabling autoplay. The problem is if you pay for the CD and want to listen to it, it will tell you only thier player works and will not warn you about the rootkit or that the rootkit can not be uninstalled without harming windows. I have read that Sony has a patch now to make hidden files visable, but they still don't let you uninstall it. I think Sony is blaming the osftware company that made the DRM program for them, but they are not doing anything to really fix the problem.

Apparently Sony's claim there is incorrect, else the CD wouldn't be playable in Linux or Mac boxes. Thus, it has to be redbook compatible, but with that rootkit that auto installs on Windows machines.

*shrugs* This is only one more reason that I reiterate my vow to NEVER purchase a copy protected CD. (My tastes don't usually run to absolutely modern music released by the major lables anyway)

They can blame all they want, but I'd be surprised if some enterprising lawyer doesn't take advantage of the situation soon.

Oh, and thanks for the heads up on all of this, Bev.

I just won't buy CDs anymore. I DO, however, appreciate music downloading services. They're decently priced (for now), and it lets me get just the songs I want.

Yep. Downloading may be the way to go. Sorry to be Windows oriented. Those of you with Mac and Linux are probably safe. I don't know how the Sony player works on those systems, but the original link is all about how it works on Windows.

Oh and thanks Zeelovemonkey, but the credit goes to Mark Russinovich. I'm not sure how to spell his name, but he's kind of my hero now.

I'm going to turn my xbox into a linux server

Shadyman, you're the second person I've heard have that kind of a plan. Go you. But I have to wonder why I keep hearing tech ideas that I could never pull off myself. Does that mean I spend too much time with programmers or not enough?

I want to do something like that to my brother's dead xbox... dvd drive gave out...
