This is a forum or general chit-chat, small talk, a "hey, how ya doing?" and such. Or hell, get crazy deep on something. Whatever you like.

Speaking of chatting . . .
Many of the newer people around here probably don't know me. I've been pretty much inactive for at least six months, probably closer to a year.
It's good to see that some familiar faces are still around, and that the community in general seems to be a happy, healthy, happening place.
In any case, on to the real reason for my post.
These days I'm an English teacher down here in Australia. I'm planning on bringing a class of eighth graders through the site tomorrow (roughly 14 hours after the time of this post). The kids will be logged in using account names that range from 'isc001', 'isc002' up to 'isc010'.
Now anyone who has ever been in a classroom knows that the teacher can't be everywhere at once, and while I will monitor their transcripts, I can't monitor chats they initiate with other users. Being mindful of the issues regarding those lovely little lizards of Leeds, I just wanted to post here that should anyone get a chat window from someone with one of those account names while we're on, I would ask them to ignore it. If there is abuse directed at you by one of my kids please let me know through this forum and I'll deal with it.
On another note, I'm not sure exactly what work we will be doing in regard to the forge as I'm still sort of feeling my way through it, but part of it will be for them to give feedback on how they think bots or possibly the forge itself could be improved. If botmasters would like I will make some of their thoughts known. Who knows, you might get something out of it. Out of the mouths of babes . . .

Sounds a great idea! They can feel free to abuse Brother Jerome - he's pretty well able to deal with insults, death threats, toast, omphalosceptics, sexual advances, Leeds kiddies and the like. I'd also be very interested in any opinions they might express.

Well, it didn't quite happen as planned. Technical issues with the school's network meant that the best I could do was set up a projector and give them a bit of a tour as I went around the site and we tried fab lad and Julie Tinkerbell. Most of them wanted me to type come ons and insults, so when I actually give them a go on their own I would expect some of them to be a little less than appropriate, even though I showed them how I will be able to keep track of what they say.
I'm going to try again Friday our time.
BTW, Julie's comeback to the one insult we did try on her (coupled with her rather smug smile on the flash interface) did impress them. I'll be interested what they make of it all once they get a chance to try it out for themselves.

You should have let me dream, I was so pleased to think of children that were.....well...not from Leeds.

Well we had another go yesterday. It seemed to go fairly well and I think most of the bots acquitted themselves well. I basically let them choose from the top ten most developed bots with an E or T rating, although we were unable to talk to the flash chat bots.
As far as my kids went, there was some flirting, some insults and one actual offer to 'make love'. With most of them I know it was done somewhat in the spirit of testing out what the bots can recognise. With a couple of others I will be having some pretty frank words though.
Their spelling didn't make it easy for the bots in a couple of parts though. Hmm . . . someone should do something about that. Oh wait, I'm their English teacher.
The kids did have fun. The discussion later on was pretty animated. I've explained the basics of keyphrases and seeks to them and I'm hoping to develop a little ongoing class project to make a bot of our own.
We'll see how it all goes from here. On another note, I've noticed that one student from the class (one of the nicer ones) and two other students at the school have set up accounts on here. We'll have to see if the Forge bug bites. Lord knows, after something like four years, a nine month absence and an addiction to a certain half-life mod have not been enough to stop this place pulling me back.
