I find religion to be the biggest detriment to world peace. Lets say the UN finally decided to unite the world under one global democracy with peace between all countries, races, sects, ethnic groups, etc..
that would not work because of religion. The Muslims have to kill christians and Jews. The Jews have to kill Amalek - some ancient tribe that opposed them. Now, the decendents of Amalek is who the jews have to kill, although the reason you don't see the Jews slaughtering poeple on the street is because nowadays one cannot identify an Amalek. The Jews believe that when the "messiah" comes, he will identify the Amalek and the Jews will finish them off... you or me could be an Amalek! actually not me.. I'm part of the Jewish race...

I think the problem is not really religion, but what people do in the name of religion. If religion becomes a way of identifying an "In" group and an "Out" group and then becomes an "us against them" deal, it's not really religion. It's people twisting religion for political reasons.
The same can be said about patriotism. There is nothing wrong with loving your country and serving your community. It's when love of your country or community becomes hatred towards (or just fear of) other countries and comunities that the problems occur. Racism and even sexism can work like that too.

Oh, PS, Colonel, there may be people who are jewish who would kill me for being an amalek or whatever, but I don't know any Jewsih people who would raise a hand to me. Most of them just try to feed me cos they think I look small. Are American Jews more mellow than other Jewish people?
Consider the example of Chinese Communism. It declared that 'religion is poison,' and sought its extermination. Tibet was a happy and peaceful Buddhist nation before the Chinese came. The Chinese destroyed that, and it was not due to religion (unless Communism qualifies as a religion). Partly it was economics (Tibet had fertile land), partly it was military (a platform to attack or defend against India), and partly it was racist (Tibetans are smaller and darker than Chinese).
Intolerance, greed and lack of compassion for one's fellow humans are the usual culprits for causing wars. Sometimes it's religious intolerance. Sometimes not.

Bev - It depend where in America. In New york city, or mid - northern NJ, you'll find the least mellow Jews on the planet, but in Los Angeles and other places west, they are as mellow as they can get....

Oh yeah, and no, there are no Jews who want to kill you or raise a hend to you, for the Jewish bible preaches peace and serenity... (I'd like to see the Jews act accordingly) but only after their "messiah" comes will they have the nerve to go killing people because they're Amalek.
you know I have a big problem with you generalizing a whole race. There is no such thing as all the members of one race being one way and all the members of another race being the other way. The Jewish people are neither worse or better than anyone else. I do not think that discrimination is a justifable reaction.
you do realise that the more people get uptight about christains and jews the more I believe that the bible is true, simply because you are proving it to be right. BEG 
Ladydyke--I was not seriously making a generalization about all Jews. I was gently poking fun at Colonel's reasoning--I hope he was not offended. I never implied that discrimination is justifiable. I just wanted to make Colonel say that all Jews are not the same and that you cannot generalize.
Also, the only person getting "uptight" about Chirstians and Jews is Colonel, and he says he's Jewish, so I'd take that with a grain of salt. I think he is trying to critique religion in general, not just those two religions.

They used to work with me, and they kept bringing in cakes and bagels and things and telling me "You must eat--look at you, you're so little." I am not actually "little" so much as short. The cake would only make me round, not tall--but you try telling that to a woman with baked goods in her hand.

I don't think it is possible to talk behind god's back. If god is all-knowing, (s)he knows what you said. If god's spirit is in all of us, it knows what we say and do (and feel...ect). If god responds to names (names being very sensitive in many religions, (s)he shows up when we start typing "god". BTW Have you read Small Gods?
