Seasons

This is a forum or general chit-chat, small talk, a "hey, how ya doing?" and such. Or hell, get crazy deep on something. Whatever you like.

I can't wait until text-to-speech and speech-to-text technology improves. I got a deaf relay phone call tonight for the first time, and it was just awful! I would be so frustrated if that was the only way I could make a simple phone call.

This lady just wanted to call the place where I work and find out how late we were open, but she kept getting hung up on. The person nearest the phone heard the relay operator's introduction ('This is blah blah, do you know blah blah blah') and since it was very loud in the room, she (employee) could only conclude that it was a telemarketer and had a few choice words about that.

Well, this lady called back later when it wasn't utter chaos and the music wasn't so loud as it had been , and wanted to know who she'd spoken to before who had 'discriminated against my deafness.' I felt so bad.

You don't realize how much you miss by not hearing a voice. The relay operator's explanation at the beginning takes forever(telling you what the hell is going on and telling you to say 'go ahead' when you're done, the way a truck driver would say 'over') and the deaf person has to wait, even if they just have one little thing to ask. And she doesn't even know if she's talking to the same person (or even the same gender) after she's been put on hold. Sucks to be her.

Also, this lady was thoroughly confused because she was told a man answered the phone earlier, and I had to explain that the employee (who uses a female name and wears dresses) is biologically male. Even then it took probably ten exchanges or so to convey this, and much longer to deal with a very irate customer who could only type words to express how upset she was that she couldn't get anyone to talk to her.

It must suck. I'd rather that all phones had a keyboard, or all stores had instant messengers or something

That is rough something we all take for granted and never give a second thought to.

my sister works for massachusetts relay for the hearing iompaired company. It's sort of sad because the turnover for the job is incredible.. And the company just changed and the people that work tehre lost all thier vacation time and took a pay cut.

That's what Australians call elementary school in case anyone is staring at the screen with a quizzically upturned eyebrow.
