Bug Stomp

I get no pop-ups on this site anymore, even though it's on my allowed list. Is this true for others? Or is it just me. It only became a problem when I switched to a new computer with the latest IE. If I'm not the only one, then perhaps that explains your problem PubDraught.

Corwin, I get pop-ups... that's not the issue as I see it. The issue is that some users have turned chats off with other users. I think Wolf Child is right... users are turning off their chats because of these one hit wonders who sign on and want to say hi as if they're texting on a cell phone, and then leave again. This may not bother you, Corwin, because I see that you still allow chatting with other users.

I am on now and everyone has their chats on. I almost always see smiley faces. Maybe it's just the time of day that you are on?

Well, Prob, right now it's just you, me, and somebody from Leeds... we don't count the one from Leeds, right?

I can't really say more than what I've said. I don't make it a practice to talk to all the users who log in; I've only chatted at length with a few of them. Two of these users, well known here, who I had started conversing with just a few months ago, all of a sudden have turned off their chats, and have kept them off for a number of days. I'm beginning to wonder if I forgot to use my deodorant.

I hate to use this forum like a personal frustration zone, but it tears at me not knowing if I did something to offend someone...

LOL, maybe it's just the heat of summer...or winter depending where you might be.

There are two reasons I'll turn off chats with users: (1) Persistent Leeds-type chatters IM-ing me (some will send three or more chat windows at once and just KEEP sending them); (2) I'm busy with another project but need the stress/comic relief of watching my bots chat. In either case, I turn them back on when the problem/task is done (or the next time I log on, if I've forgotten).

So it may just be that your chatters have been a bit busy lately, PubDraught.

Thanks, Ulrike... I try not to look at the negative, but you know how situations and problems always hit you in twos and threes, and sometimes more than that? Sadly, it's been that way lately and I'm just depressed, that's all... I don't feel the joy of being here as much as I used to.

Does anyone know how to shut off the bot accent thingy for bot - holidays?

On the news page (link at the top-right), scroll down a bit and there's a box that says "Set Preferences." The third one down is "Bot Holidays." Note that this will only stop it for chats on your computer. If a guest or other user has holidays turned on, the bot will still participate.

PubDraught, I would like to echo Ulrike's reasons and add a 3rd: For some reason my IM window is half the size of it's contents so I see only the left side of the chat and no send button. I can't adjust the window size. It's probably some quirk or a Greasemoneky addon or something I added to Firefox. I just don't have time to figure it out now.

I was on earlier today at the same time with a user who I had chatted with on numerous occasions, and this user has had chat off for nearly a week. I was hoping the user would see that I was online and derive that I was trying to get hold of the user. I tried talking a few times to one of the user's bots, saying things like "why does so-and-so have their chat off" and "did I offend so-and-so", hoping this user would at least catch it in the transcripts and maybe contact me... but nothing. Ah, it's so frustrating not knowing if I did something or not and being powerless to do nothing but... sit...

Jackie123: Alas, I know of no way to turn that completely off. On the main page there is a place where you can be exempted from bot holidays, but it apparently doesn't always apply.

I know, it's frustrating when you work to give your bot a certain style of speech, only to have it messed up. And it makes it really hard to make revisions based on transcripts when the transcripts are distorted. And I found the "jive" holiday to be in rather bad taste. But in the end, YOU GET TO MAKE BOTS FOR FREE!!!
