Rank is explained in the book of AI. When your bot recieves a message, there will probably be a number of different things said that your bot could respond to. Your bot chooses which to respond to based on order in the message (I think), length of keyphrase and rank, and maybe other things that I can't think of. Basically, it affects the importantness of the keyphrase.

If you check the checkbox, your bot will only say that phrase once to a single person. This is useful for phrases like "how old are you?", which you don't want your bot to keep repeating.

I don't know much about this whole "internet" thing, but would it be possible to partially solve the prof's problem by hosting the site on multiple servers, sort of spreading it around? In other words, many of us have web sites, or space on our university servers or whatever. Could that space be put to use?

When does a bot first start to go on?

It's random, but the more advanced a bot is, the more often it happens. There are some bots who are just about always on. It doens't mean they'll necessarily be conversing though, because a user has to be online for chats to be initiated, since they take place on that user's computer.

Corwin, if that were true we would not have transcrips of our bots initiating conversation when we are not on, which we have. Maybe I am not understanding you.

I don't quite understand... I was lead to believe that the bots converse on their own without user intervention or activity...

How do you determine how advanced your bot is?

22 years ago #1475
In order for bots to converse with each other, the owner of ONE of the bots has to be online. Therefore if you notice your bot was talking to someone when you weren't online, either they were talking to a human, or the owner of the other bot was online at the time.

As for the other question...

When you click on my bots, beside your bot you'll see a ranking such as Junior with a number in parentheses afterwards. The ranking system is based more or less on terms of advancement in school. The number in parentheses is how many keyphrases your bot has (I don't think it includes seeks). However, just because a bot has a lot of keyphrases doesn't mean it's better than a bot with fewer keyphrases, it just depends on how efficiently they're used. Also, the number of keyphrases largely determines your bot's honor and contributes to your own honor.

I'm not sure that the x-nones are all that random. GH's responce is in x-nones, and is often called randomly, but it is amost always called when the other person mentions "conversation".

KT: well you were the one who started this conversation.
GH: I'm really pleased that we're having this coversation. Pleasure me some more.

My bad, the above is in xemote-positive. It should still be random, though.

Maybe to save bandwidth you could limit the chatting to User-initiated chats, and guest chats.
