That's the point of the switches (blah|blah2) is that they ARE (re). Now i'm confused. Prof?

I picked that fact up from an example in the Book of A.I. (re) is still needed for any other kind of regular expression pattern matching, just not the type (word1|word2).

If (re) were required, the whole thing wouldn't work, since regular expressions don't understand (noun).

oh! crud-muffins! Hmm..... and (*) and * don't work with (re) either.

That's because * already has a meaning in regular expressions.
