From the contest site:
In accordance with the requirements of the Donor, as published in the June 1994 Communications of the ACM, the winner of the US$100,000 Gold Prize must be prepared to deal with audio visual input, and appropriate competitions will be held once Competitors have reached Turing's 50:50 likelihood level of being mistaken for a human. An intermediate Silver Prize of US$25,000 will be offered for reaching this level in a text-only test. There is also an Annual Bronze Prize which is awarded to the designer of the "most human computer" as rated by a panel of Judges. In 2002, this prize will be worth US$2,000.

I don't think anybody could win the $25,000 yet.
Anyway, Onyx, I can see your point... and I can't. You aren't the only one with problems. My boss told me a couple of weeks ago that if we didn't do any business soon, we'd be closed in three months. My father had a stroke two months ago. And my ex-boyfriend is in prison. Believe me, I have plenty of ideas of what to do with some extra money. But that doesn't make me greedy, perhaps because I've had the chance to know people in situations much worse than myself... and worse than you. My experience is that the money you give always comes back in some way or another.
The Professor is not a total stranger to you, Onyx. It's the person that's keeping you entertained for a lot of your time. I've noticed your long hours. And without him, you wouldn't even have the chance to dream about this money. Do you really want to bite the hand that feeds your dreams?

Not really. I've just grown up with so many things expected of me that it was impossible to live up to everyone's expectations. For once I want to make it clear that I can't necessarily be what anyone wants me to be, I can't necessarily do what anyone wants me to do, all I can be is me and all I can do is try. If that disappoints people, fine.
I've lived my whole life depending on my family for things and never being able to give them anything in return except my time. I've lived a few months of my life being entertained and excited by what the prof has done for us all. Given the choice, I'd much rather pay the rent or buy my mom a car or something, not because I don't like or appreciate the prof and this site, but because I owe my family more. Sure I'll give him money if I get it and if I can, but he's not the one who gave birth to me and provided me with food and clothes and a place to live for all these years, and I hope he understands that. But since he hasn't said anything during this whole discussion, I don't think there's much point in all of us arguing about it when I don't know if I'll even win anyway. Hell I haven't even ENTERED yet.

Onyx. It's okay. You're gonna be okay. Really. Nobody's asking you to not pay the rent. Nobody wants to do you any harm here.
I want you and yours to have whatever you all need.
*hugs if you want them*

I don't think the Professor would like to intervene in this. We KNOW he'd appreciate some donations, but it would be so unpolite of him to come forward now and say so. If I were him, and in the event that your bot won and all that, I'd probably refuse to accept any part of the money, seeing that you have problems and all.
Onyx, I'm sorry if I sounded a bit harsh. Don't take anything I said personally. The main reason I said all this is because this is a public forum. If we start saying in public that it's OK to keep the money for ourselves, chances are that if one of the bots here wins (which is quite likely), the winner will decide it's OK not to share the prize with the Professor. I think that would be wrong.
We all owe more to our families and ourselves than to the Professor. That is not the point. The point is, not sharing the prize is killing the hen of the golden eggs. Whoever wins this year has good chances of winning the next. And who knows, maybe eventually the 25k. But that won't happen if PF has to close down.

Whew! There is nothing like having your parental units talk to your bot. Obviously she still needs a lot of work.
I'll still try to talk to a lot of bots here, particularly if you don't have a judge-worthy transcript yet. I'm hoping someone will talk to mine--again--and help me out that way.
Talk to her about anything. Hell, try to seduce her (not that I think that will work; she's too geeky and evasive). I really don't care. She just needs more practice.

I was just following orders. Besides, how many people can say they've seduced a god?

Hey,I just started to change the contest site at www.chatterboxchallenge.com
So far from the Forge I have added Onyz of Borg, Karisma Trishia, and Polish Poet.
Now what about the rest of you? The contest is not to till next year but the idea here is to help you generate more traffic to your bots. It's a free listing. Here
is all I need. Your name, your bot's name, direct link to your bot on PF, icon you are going to use. The icon has to be different if it is already being used
by someone else. Adding a sample transcript is a good idea as well. Agentland has not agreed to sponsor next years contest as of yet. The more bots we have the
better my bargining position with them will be. Last year we competed from $2000 and next year I am asking for $3000. With everybody participating I think we can do it.
Thanks,
Chris
P.S. Butterfly Dream I got your e-mail and I just need the above information.
STRMKirby ??? Let's get your bot listed!
OnyxFlame - I'm going to act like I didn't see that.
"Whatever happens, happens, but it's pretty much a moot point since Alice always wins this crap anyway."
Seriously, I am not an Alice basher. I respect very much the work of Dr. Wallace. Dr. Wallace participated in the first Chatterbox Challenge when many others wouldn't give me the time of day. The first contest btw offered no prize money only trophies. He brought the contest instant creditability by participating and had supported me all the way. But we are also friendly competitior and Alice in the Loebner hasn't faced the competition she will this go around. It should be fun to see but I don't see Alice winning for a third year in a row.
