saying "go away". I actually had a teenage family member do just that. He called me over saying He just wanted to talk to God Louise. I had to tell him that they were bots and you had to click the X

The "most popular" category is dominated by sexbots -- perhaps sexbots should be given a separate category of their own, so that guests can see some of the other possibilities.

Hee hee, as if guests check there. If they did, there is a check box for whether or not to include adult bots, but I don't think most go to that much effort. In all my ranting about annoying people who pass up SeXXybimbo69 to hit on Talkie Toaster, I forgot most guests just talk to whatever talks to them, and keep saying "go away" when they want the chat to end instead of closing the chat window. The reason some don't read about the bots and pick a sexbot (or another option) is they just talk to what/whomever IMs them. Some read about the bot (thank you to the nice one of those), but, well, when it comes to popularity of nonsexbots the people have spoken I guess (although in this case a large number of the people in question are teenage boys). At least with all the sexbots up on the bot page those who do look can find a bot that actually was meant to cyber.

Out of curiosity, seeing Calrene's post above, I wonder if anyone who is around now has cited or acknowledged the prof and the PF in any publications (or if anyone knows of any that did)? I am too lazy to do a search, I just think it would be neat to know. I kind of hope there is something--ALICE tends to be mentioned a lot, and that's great, but it would be good to see the PF in publications too.
I think it is good to see evidence of the ripples we make (the effect we have on others and the world). The Prof probably isn't as egotistical as I am (I love seeing my name in print)but it couldn't hurt for him to see a public cite or thank you now and then. When a former student of mine included me in is list of thank yous when he was published I was thrilled even though I knew I didn't really do anything to help this brilliant kid in his field. Think how much nicer it would be to see students and academics (or others) thank the Prof for something they actually used in their project.
If there's nothing now, that's OK too. I am too lazy to work up anything publishable myself. Most of us are here for the fun.

Bev, in response to your query, the Forge is pretty widely known. I knew who most of you 'old timers'
were - and a little about the bots - before I became a user here. Also, our university requires all syllabi to cite all websites used for academic purposes. I don't know about all schools though. Before I can use an outside source, it has to be approved by my IT committee. Of course, the anonymity of the student has to be preserved and any charges to the students has to be approved by the Dean of Finance. I'm thinking about writing a novel 'The Botulist' for the SciFi Channel. Wanna co-author?

Interzone, TY. What fun and quirky taste you have.
Carlene, not that kind of publish and cite, silly. I mean will you or anyone you know publish an article in a peer review journal about your projects with chat bots? If you bother to write up and defend a PhD thesis, you may as well make it into an article and submit it somewhere that will look good on a CV. I can't see why your Uni would want you to wait 2 years on that. Then again, many administrative policies don't make sense to me (e.g. telling students they have "privacy" on the Internet! What a crock. The webs are a public forum and students should do no university or class projects they would be ashamed to put their name on and show their mother.) As for Sci Fi channel, I don't think we would have the same writing style or agree on content
Remember, my idea of privacy involves never writing on topics I wouldn't want to explain to mom and the kiddies, and that may clash with your preferences. Of course, if it involves bots smashing or electrocuting chatters for making unwarranted assumptions and being rude, then I'll write those parts. I guess I am a romantic at heart, and that is my fairytale ending.

They put theses and dissertations online at my school the day you submit it to the graduate office (as defended), whether you want them to or not. I very much did not want it to be there, but unless I can get an Internet evil-doer to replace my thesis with a limerick or haiku, even after death I'll be sorry I wrote that thesis.
