He didn't. He had a cue card that said, "I'm especially good at expectorating (SPIT)." They had to run through several takes to get him to stop *saying* "Spit" when he sang his line.

The desert's like the primordial whatsis, but so's the forest! Full of dark primeval energy, like... (but the bugs in the forest all taste funny)
Thing I never figured out is how a chump like Gaston, who had no clue what primeval meant, knew what expectorating meant.
I heard that they finally had to get Lucas to CG a fake Gaston in those scenes because he couldn't get it right!
