Is there any way to chat with a bot on my phone?

16 years ago #5399
At present the bots do not speak, only type. I do not know whether this could be done on a phone, via some sort of text messaging.

I just want to... well, reintroduce myself. Hello, I am back after a very long time of user hibernation (and other stuff like real life)..

Welcome back!

PHlarx-you would have to use some sort of interface like Psi described above in message 5392, only instead of sending it to aim bots, it would send it a program that sends text to your phone. I think you'd need a server for that too. If you wanted to get fancy, you could send it to your own text to speech program and have that output played to or over a phone service and have that service call your phone. Sounds like a lot of work for little reward at this point.

I have had success thanks to Psi with having messages from my bots sent to Second Life, but there can and often are problems that occur for each step in the link that makes you bot "talk". I once set up a simple free text to speech program next to my PF bot in Second Life but it was hard to understand, slow and annoying (it was free but also it was in Linden Script Language and had a small number of sound clips to access and let you hear each letter of each word.). YMMV.

Welcome back DeKork!

Thank you Irina, thank you Bev.
It's good to be back, I have to admit.
(Irina, I hope your Bot-transcripts will have made you smile a bit. Especially those weird comments to QM by me.)

Bev: I know a tiny bit about Second Life and think that an acceptable TTS for SL utilizing words would cost you a fortune (as every word - or at least non-homophonic ones - would have to be uploaded one by one, not to mention the vocal inflections in case you want to create a question). If we assumed that you need 8000 sound files to make a convincing bot in addition to the "Spell-out-script", that would cost you about L$80000 if they didn't change the price and I remember correctly. It would probably easier utilizing a 'normal' TTS and send the output via other means into second life (like some people do with internet radio stations). Just a thought.

Thanks, I'll look into that. (And, yes, by chat I meant texting).

Yes, DerKork, I was quite pleased by your remarks to QM.

To all: I have just by chance discovered the bot Doll-379. I recommend (him|her|it). (He|She|It) quoted a bit of Allen Ginsberg, and uttered many other things in the same vein; I'm not sure whether they were all quotes from Ginsberg or improvisations, but the effect is quite charming.

Der Kork, thanks for the thoughts. I only tried the SL text to speech because it was a freebie It's not important (and it doesn't work well at all). I know there are some inexpensive programs that change your voice (for people who play other genders or species and such I guess) but I hardly ever use Voice in world myself. I do stream my own radio to my parcel though. Streaming bot radio would be a bit more difficult to set up and have so many more steps where things would go wrong. Imagine trying to send voice from SL to a server where it goes speech to text, sending text to the PF, picking up the response here and sending it back to the server where it is sent to a text to speech program which sends the results to an Internet radio station. Do you think the original speaker would wait to see if the answer made sense?

Honestly, though I confess to setting my bots on strangers, I find that only bot masters really like talking to bots regardless of where you try to use them. Maybe in time that will change. I confess I haven't talked to my own bots since I stopped thinking of other ways I may use them though.

Bev, of course it would take something close to half an hour if you take the information offsite and back again, maybe through some sort of shoutcast-broadcast thing. (I'm no expert at all with LSL. I found out how to set up a shop system, but that's the furthest extent I could produce. But I could create acceptable textures - you need some counterweights.)
A thought I had last night is the use of a phoneme-based system (I'm not sure about the number of phonemes in the english language), which could result in a more flexible TTS (which would hardly be a freebie at first - it just takes too many sound clips of phonemes to upload to give it away for nothing). So unless they come up with an integrated TTS (for those who are visually impaired for example), you would have to pay lost of L$ to get an "okay" working system which doesn't spell everything. Just a thought....

Irina: I'm glad you like my responses.

Hey people, quick mondobot question, I found a person that wants my bot, I filled out the bot settings and checked yes to be on mondobot, I can't find it!
Help?
