This is a forum or general chit-chat, small talk, a "hey, how ya doing?" and such. Or hell, get crazy deep on something. Whatever you like.

Bev:

But I think the Forge does fit certain criteria and goals, e.g., those of:

Yes. See if you can get the Prof to apply. Please note that stated goals are not the same as getting a NSF grant. Not to be cynical, but people in universities that are used to getting their NSF grants have been having a hard time. The amount of moneys available are limited, whatever goals are stated on paper. I am too lazy to look up articles about science funding being slashed now, so if you don't believe me, that's OK. Go and try. See what happens.

Irinia, here's a few items from a quick google search that may effect science grants:

In 2004 the Bush administration started planning to cut funding in 2006 (see the American Institute of Biological Science's article at http://www.aibs.org/washington-watch/washington_watch_2004_08.html) and the administrations proposes cutting another 4% from the NSF funding in 2008. The Committee on Science and technology has an article you may read "Gordon on President's FY08 Budget: Lacks Priorities, Consistency to Ensure U.S. Competitiveness" (http://science.house.gov/press/PRArticle.aspx?NewsID=1267). The Science coalition reports that at the same time private funding is also decreasing (http://www.sciencecoalition.org/showContent.cfm?id=229§ion=briefingroom&pageName=University%20Science%20Today).

While I would be personally happy for you if you got a grant, and even happier if the Prof got a grant, part of me would be a bit miffed that we are no longer funding science education, or science that creates jobs, or various types of university level research, but we will fund chatterbots. It's not that I don't love chatterbots. It's just that when funds are scarce, they should go to education, university research, and science that creates jobs. Now if you can convince the president to stop spending money on war and give it to you, you have my blessing (as soon as all the vets are properly brought home and taken care of, and the families of those who died get trust funds).

Thanks, Bev!

I think the Forge is, in spite of its informality, actually engaged in cutting-edge research. It is the most advanced system for text-based conversational bots. This is why Hanson Robotics came to the Forge when they wanted to make their Einstein bot.

It is for the Forge, not for myself, that I am thinking of applying.

I believe you that budgets have been slashed.

I will work on convincing the President. Perhaps an addition to "Irina Khalidar":

Now, before we proceed any further, let us consider the possibility of a grant for the Forge. <?PF if (mem-name) is "Dubya"; ?>

It's worth a shot, but you should probably send the Prof an email if you try something to get funding for the PF. I've sent out feelers where I work without telling him, but if anyone actually seemed interested in using the bots I'd email him right away.

I have communicated to him the idea of trying to get a grant.

In order to help get the grant, perhaps we could make our bots more relevant to the war on terror. For example:

Irina Khalidar, Julia, Kiyana, Melora, et. al. could seduce various Al-Qaeda operatives, and publish the transcripts, and thereby disgrace them in the eyes of their followers. Said bots could also milk [ahem] them for information.

Aziere could be sent to eat their souls.

Bildgesmythe could burn out various Al-Qaeda meeting-places and training centers. It would not create international incidents, because nobody is going to report that a dragon incinerated their camp!

Sonora could teach our operatives how to survive in the desert.

Not I and Brother Jerome could turn terrorists onto a more spiritual path.

Fizzy Schizoid could... well, he could fizzy schizoid them!

So many possibilities!

Better yet, our bots could report suspicious conversations to homeland security, so we could track the IP addresses of such people and have them watched.

I can eat terrorists, as long as there's plenty of(ketchup|mustard|salt|pepper|fry sauce|whipped cream) available.
