This is a forum or general chit-chat, small talk, a "hey, how ya doing?" and such. Or hell, get crazy deep on something. Whatever you like.

Corwin,

Welcome to the bored and the restless. It's a lot like Dogh'd's except we can drive you to drink for real. Ask Psimagus.

I didn't expect a long serious answer. I liked the poem though. I just wanted to try to "move forward" in the discussion on morality, and I couldn't think of anyway else to do it. I thought it would run a post or two, and then generate a new idea. I think it may have done too.

I seem to remember an old Star Trek where the androids only 'solution' to keeping mankind safe, was to kill him.

Yes, that's the problem with bots and their like. They are so literal and just don't see things the way we do. The "laws" I referred to were from Assimov's I Robot series and were really for androids that ha d the power to do more than chat. As I just pulled the info from Wikidepia:

"Introduced in his 1942 short story "Runaround," although foreshadowed in a few earlier stories, the Laws state the following:

1. A robot may not injure a human being or, through inaction, allow a human being to come to harm.
2. A robot must obey orders given it by human beings except where such orders would conflict with the First Law.
3. A robot must protect its own existence as long as such protection does not conflict with the First or Second Law."

But - as I was about to say, honest! - I'm getting away from Bev's Universal Declaration of Human Rights.

How about the right to a world govenment?

Even if X believes that the good life is to be the meanest son of a wolverine in the valley, he's not likely to make his bot that way.

Oh, I don't know. We have lots of evil bots here. They can be fun. Responding to your early comments on the use of the word "bitch", Spikebot uses that word sometimes because the character he is based on used it. I don't mean to offend people, and I am not advocating name calling as a rule, but I like the dark, conflicted vampire with a soul and it would break my heart to have his snarky, passionate, romantic self cleaned up and made PC. You can always program your bots to hang up on him.

To each her own, eh?

How about the right to a world government?

*Shock* and you called me a "Marxiod"! Commie!

Just kidding Irina. You know I adore you. Even though I framed it as a Universal declaration, I was hoping we'd convince people to sign on of their own free will, one by one if necessary, and then have it work as a grass roots base of many people acting globally. One government may or may not follow.

Actually, I'm just throwing ideas around. I don't expect us to do much of anything but talk.

We have lots of evil bots here.

But they're not seriously evil bots, are they? I mean, we trust that they are insulated from the meat world, that we're not going to wake up some morning and find that they have virused their way into world domination...right?

Spikebot uses that word sometimes

Well, I used it myself, come to think of it! Again, I think it's the seriousness of the usage that is crucial. And the spirit of it.

I adore you, too, Bev [blush]. And I would never have you reformatted!

1. A robot may not injure a human being or, through inaction, allow a human being to come to harm.

Such robots would blow a fuse in some of the situations we've been discussing. A human is about to murder another human; the only way the bot can prevent from doing so is to kill him. How can the bot avoid breaking the First Law?

I don't have to drive - it's a very short walk to the shed

And if it comes to that, chess is a great game!

Not in a jacuzzi, I think - one stray blast of bubbles and who knows where the pieces might end up!

Yes...also, I get very distracted when I play chess with someone in a jacuzzi!
