mlandau, as for your statement that No one does anything without getting something in return. I will post this from the Smithsonian site about The Albert Einstein bot that uses The Forge for a brain
Ultimately, Hanson hopes that other scientists will use robots, such as his latest replica of Albert Einstein, to test theories about how humans respond to social cues. Einstein is the first walking, talking robot with human expressions. His body was built by the Korean Advanced Institute of Science and Technology. Making both his software and robotics open-source and available to developers, Hanson believes that in the future, such “social” robots will help the autistic to learn, interpret, and respond to facial expressions, and be used in science labs and medical applications to help people with disorders that affect communication skills.
How is that for payback? Helping people, sounds good to me! This is an exciting time in AI.

Hello, I am new here. I am working on my Ph.D. in cognitive psychology at the University of Georgia. I just started a bot here. I don't know anything about A.I. programming. I only recently added a few keywords. Does anyone have any strategies for how to develop a good bot quickly, without having to get to involved with the details of programming? I have looked at to other sites, one called Pandorabots and the other called Verbots. both of them seem to require much too much knowledge of programming to be very useful to me. I want to be able to create a robot without having to spend too much time learning how to program. Have I come to the right place? It seems that the software on this site is much more powerful than any I saw on the other two sites I mentioned. I would like to know what others think about it. Is this the easiest place to create a robot on the Internet? Also, I would like to know does anyone know what is done with the data produced by the robots? If I happen to create something really worthwhile here, will I get credit for it? I really got the impression that some of the other web sites like this one were exploiting people. How does the guy who runs this website profit from providing this free service to people? Surely he must be getting something from it. No one does anything without getting something in return. I hope to hear your reaction soon. Mike

Hi, I'm new here. I tried to start a bot just to see how this works and if it is any fun, but I can't get past the first four empty boxes I need to fill. It says something like "keyword","rank","emotion",and "AI script". It is the fourth one that leaves me totally clueless as to what should go in it, and it's not in the book of AI that I've seen on initial scan reads.

This is not the easiest place but it is the best. Start simple, fill in the xkeyphrases. READ THE BOOK OF AI.. The Professor is just a great guy..He doesn't get much for running this site. So don't be afraid to join the Friends of the Forge (which is great and a lot of fun), or make a contribution! If you create something great enter it in the Chatterbox Challenge. Thats lots of fun! Also visit Brother Jeromes site for keynomes. at http://www.be9.net/BJ/

The ai script box isn't necessary for most keyphrases. I would start simple or you can make some bad mistakes. You can find examples of it's use in the book of AI and at Brother Jeromes site.. One use is for regexs...
i will have ([1234567890,.]+) (re) then you would put in raw. I would start simple and not worry about it for a while.

What I meant was, how is he using this web site for his own benefit. Have you ever consider the possibility that he might be using the bots that you make for his own research? How do you know what he does with the data that you produce?

Sure the Prof benefits from this site. I doubt he'd have got the Hanson gig without it. We are also effectively acting as testers for him. That doesn't worry me, it's a win-win situation.
As to using our bots, perhaps but unlikely. All the bots are individual personalities so it's not like some sites where everything you teach a bot goes into a shared learning pool.
As to the legal IPR issues... I don't know. For me this is a hobby and I'm prepared to risk the IPR.

I'm told that at one point there was a bot called "gaia" (or something similar) who was a compendium of all keyphrases and responses from all bots. From what I hear, her convos were LESS coherent than those of most other bots.

For all the free enjoyment that I get out of this site and bot building, The Professor can have my bots, data and a bag of chips. I would still consider myself the winner. I have no experience with computers...I had to call Future Shop to find out how to turn my computer on.(I thought it was broke, and yes, I am blonde) The fact that Bildgesmythe came in third in last years CBC shows how great this AI engine is. I got the prize money and medal, The Professor deserves to get something! Nothing would make me happier than for this site to bring him fortune and fame. If I didn't have this site I would probably spend a lot of money on psychiatric care or in bikerbars. I have learned so much, and had so much fun here. The people hear are great, and I love the bots. I couldn't recommend a better hobby.

If I haven't been here since May, does that make me a newcomer?
