I doubt it would work. People do pledge drives for causes that they believe in, and can't do much for. That doesn't really seem to be likely.

I somehow don't think we could get people to donate based on how much we update our bots. Most people have barely any interest in chatbots... I guess you really have to make one to appreciate the work that goes into them. I know no one I know would offer money for me to update my bots. They'd look at me like I was crazy.

I think if we wanted to raise money with the chatbots, we would need to do it by making bots for people on commission. That might actually bring in some money, if we could get people interested.

On the other hand, I think an in-house pledge drive might be beneficial. Perhaps the Prof could set a sliding scale of "possible improvements/additions" and we could pitch in to get them implimented? You'd think it'd be a win-win.

Regarding the recent news posted by The Professor... I understand completely but I wish the situation was different. I do hope, however, that The Professor will or can post prior to having downtime on the site, so the rest of us that are free can schedule our time around his. I have and do really enjoy doing ai experimentation (not counting the fun involved) here.

Suggestion:
If downtime is necessary, a consistent schedule would be least frustrating for regular users. The most obvious one would be nine-to-five, Monday through Friday, server time, depending on how much time the Professor needs. Or if a regular schedule isn't feasible, then perhaps a default screen indicating that the Forge is down due to server conflicts.

I also hope it isn't necessary, but either of the above would make it cause fewer problems.

Considering all the work he did to set up this site, we really ought to just try to be flexible for as long as the situation continues. I don't think we can ask of him that he keep a constant, regular work schedule all the time. Does anyone do that these days? As long as we still get a five minute warning before the server is shut off, I'm fine with it being unavailable sometimes. A default screen sounds like a very good idea though if the forge is not up, what screen would we get when we tried to sign in anyway?

And on the bright side, this will mean the server will be restarted much more often, so the xnoneitis epidemics will be practically eradicated for a while.

I agree, rainstorm. I wouldn't mind a warning screen or something prior to shutdown and I definitely have a lot of sympathy for The Professor and his situation. I'm just glad the site was created in the first place.

If the Prof needs the CPU cycles then so be it, I'm grateful he shares his resources when he can. A shutdown alert would be nice, as would a default screen.

Maybe it really is time for an in-house pledge drive to buy a new server for the Forge? I'd be happy to chuck in a few quid.

It will just permit us to do something else from time to time. Lol.

I think that is a great idea..I am going to as soon as I get the check from the CBC..We all get a lot of fun here, it sure would not hurt to kick in.

Even a fairly small donation like 5 or 10 dollars(or quid... why is the plural for pounds, quid? Is one a quad?) from each of us would probably go a long way towards helping the site.
