Read the transcripts.

The more developed your bot is, the more frequently it'll chat with other bots. Until you've built up it's brain a bit it probably won't chat much

I am probably wrong, but...It always seemed to me that the more you were on line..and the more you talked to other bots or worked on your bots, the more conversations you got..I got a lot of conversations from the very begining.

I think you're right. How developed your bot is affects how likely it is to chat when you're *not* online. I wasn't being very clear - it's been so hot today I think my brain has turned to jelly

do bots have to be on your friends list for your bot to talk to them?

No, they decide who to talk to at random. But the more advanced your bot is the more likely it is to be online when you're not and the more chats it'll get.
