Bot Contest

Here I'll be posting information on various Bot contests that challenge and test a Bot's AI and realism. Feel free to post comments and updates on contests, as well as announcements for new contests.

<+2>LOL BEV!

Thanks Prob123. Personally, Psimagus' anagrams always crack me up.I wish when my brain scrambled letters, it would reassemble them into new words.

Oh, I'm sure it does. You just haven't identified in which language yet

is there prize money for best new bot in the challenge?

18 years ago #3517
No. Actually there is no money for anyone yet. I don't think they have found a sponsor.

Microsoft can't force anyone to use their jdk's, but it might present a threat to the Forge in another way. I just gave a brief glance at their site and their system apparently allows you to use highly developed languages like Java or C++. Of course, you can do that anyway, the question (which I don't know enough right now to answer) is, do they make it easy? If they do, this might be a threat because using these languages, one can in principle make a much more powerful bot, e.g., one which can have a searchable database, one which can reason, etc. To some extent, Forge bots can do this by inserting JavaScript, But Java and C++ are much more powerful. Microsoft might make these languages much more accessible to botmakers by supplying lots of AI features. To compete, the Forge would have to offer similar features. The Professor would probably not have time to do this, but if several of us worked together, we might be able to. It would be a pity if Microsoft were to corner the market and end up owning everyone's ideas for a pittance. It would also be a pity if the Professor's idea were to be ripped off by MS as soon as it proved itself viable. Whether through the Forge or not, I would like to see stuff out there for anyone to use without having to pay big bucks or sign their rights away.

I've been sitting on this concept for a while-a hybrid forge bot. Besides javascript, through the use of iframes, you could use PHP and a mysql database to process some of the information, or for things where you have a lot of data. Although, databases really aren't my area, so I'll let you guys ponder on that.

To compete, the Forge would have to offer similar features.

It does already. With the pointy brackets hack, you can incorporate absolutely any web-enabled programming or content you want to. And with the double iframe hack, you've got full data control in and out.
MS will fail to take over the AI market, just like they failed to take over the Internet when they launched MS Net. They're thinking far too many orders of magnitude too low, and the AI jagannatha will roll over them heedlessly. The bottom line is that conversational AI is going to be a much bigger 'Next Big Thing' than the internet was.
Besides, the PF Robotics Edition is a de facto industry standard, and MS aren't even off the launch (or drawing?) pad yet.

a hybrid forge bot.

I'd love to patch a learning bot in to handle the xnones, and to learn from all the keyphrase-based conversation, even when it wasn't contributing xnones. I reckon that would have some potential!
And I still think OpenCyc integration would be a promising avenue for PF3 (like the Prof hasn't got enough on his plate! )

As a non programmer, I think the PF is easier to deal with that MS. The PF is freindly and you can start knowing nothing. I did, and I still know very little.

The PF allows me to learn when and if I want to. People told me about the iframe hack a long time ago, and if I ever get my KPs in order, I intend to learn about iframe--but I don't have to and that's great. It's all up to me.

As for MS, I think chatterbots are an afterthought, not a priority. I think they are going to focus on Zune and Vista. I hope they put most of it on Zune (not that I will use either).

O/T Did any one hear that Ballmer blames low Vista sales on pirates? It's hard to have low sales when people want new PCs and Vista is preloaded, but it's even harder to believe that hoards of pirates want a resource hog loaded with DRM "features" that could accidentally disable your system if any MS program thinks it may have been pirated. I am sure there's a big demand for an OS with more DRM in the pirate crowd.

Also off topic: Why don't we have an emotion that rolls it's eyes?

I remember a few weeks back, my mom said something like, "I keep hearing about all these problems with Vista. I don't think we should upgrade to it." She said this as if it was a profound revelation.

My response? "Of course not. You NEVER upgrade to a new OS as soon as it comes out." Ignoring other Vista issues, any new software inevitably has tons of undiscovered bugs when it first comes out.
