Root also means to work hard. It's also the part of the plant that's below ground and Root is the last name of Elihu Root, secretary of state from 1905-1909.

I didnt know abut the hard work part, but yeah about the plant and I guess the secretary of state thing too

Just to clarify, in Australia 'to root' is a slang term used interchangeably with 'to f*ck'.

I've always derived a great deal of amusement whenever I've heard an American say something about 'rooting for the home team'.
