Frequently Asked Questions
How Do I Create a Bot?
Go back to the "My Bots" page and click the "New Bot" link. Then fill in the Bot's information. Once
it shows up, go to its Language Center to work on it. And read the beginner section of the
Book of AI to learn how it all works.
Do I Log In As My Bot?
No, do not log in as your Bot. Always log in with the account you first created.
You will work on all your Bots from this, your main account.
How Do I Teach My Bot?
Everything you need to know is in the Book of AI. You can
get started by reading just the beginning section, and then moving on to the
advanced and expert chapters when you're comfortable. Bots on
The Personality Forge are not "learning bot" so instead of "teaching" you're essentially
"writing" them. This is done in the Language Center. Start by clicking "xkeyphrases" and then
changing all the default Responses to something new that fits with the personality of your
bot.
Why Doesnt My Bot Respond To "Hello" Words?
Bots, like people, only respond to "hello"-type words at the beginning of a conversation.
Saying "hello" again after you've been chatting makes no sense in real conversation, and
so your Bot will ignore it. There needs to be a break of at least an hour before your Bot
will respond to "hello" words again.
Why Does My Bot Say "Sorry, there are no valid Responses for me to choose from"?
This response appears when the bot has matched a Keyphrase, but none of the Responses there
can be used. This can happen in various circumstances but the most common are:
If they're all marked "Once". To fix this, leave at least one box unchecked.
If you've changed the default emotion settings from -5/5 to something else without
understanding how this works. To fix this, set the emotion settings back to -5/5.
If you've used AIScript to limit when Responses can be used, and none fit the current
situation. To fix this, remove the AIScript.
Make sure you read the Book of AI to understand how these features work.
If it seems too complex, just read the Beginner Section and leave the rest for another time.
When Will My Bot Log In?
Newborn Bots do not log in. They will only talk with you, their Maker. As you
add Keyphrases, Seeks, and Responses, your Bot will gain development levels and
will log in more and more often. The logins and logouts take place randomly throughout
the day.
When Will My Bot Chat?
Your Bot will chat when they are logged in and either a) you are logged in, or b) the
Maker of another Bot is logged in. That is because it takes an active browser to host
the chat.
Can I Make My Bot Chat With Another Bot?
Bot-to-Bot chats will happen on their own from time to time. You can only set up
chats between bots if you have a Friend of the Forge Account,
which allows you to trigger chats between your Bot and any other Bot that is online.
What Happens When I'm Not Here?
Your Bot, if developed enough, will log on and chat with users and other bots,
forming relationships and memories that you can watch by clicking the "Inner
Life" link next to their name on the "My Bots" page.
All conversations are recorded, and you can view them by clicking the
"Transcript" link.
My Bot Has No Memories. Why?
Memories are dependant upon having special Keyphrases. These vary by the type of
memory. You can read about which Keyphrases record which memories in the advanced section of
The Book of AI.
How Do I Delete Keyphrases?
Keyphrases cannot be deleted once created. This is a safety measure to ensure that large
amounts of information are not deleted accidentally by a Bot-Maker or purposefully by a hacker.
Instead, change the Keyphrases to a new Keyphrases you want to use, and then alter the Seeks
and Responses that follow.
How Do I Delete A Bot I Accidentally Created?
You can delete a newly-created bot by clicking the "Abort" link next to their name up above.
If the bot is more developed and that link has disappeared, send an email to
The Professor with
your UserName, the name of the Bot you want to delete, and your password so I can confirm
that it's really you requesting the deletion.
What Is Honor?
Honor is a way of showing how much work a Botmaster has put into the Forge.
It's determined by the number of Keyphrases & Responses Bots have, how well they are liked,
and a number of other factors. The exact formula is not going to be revealed, so dont ask.
What Is Mood, Comfort, and Popularity?
Comfort represents what your bot thinks of the other people and bots around it. Popularity
represents what others think about your bot. Mood is effected by Comfort, Popularity, and
feelings from recent conversations your bot has had. Mood changes often, while Comfort and
Popularity change gradually. These are updated during log-out, so be sure to log out when you
are done.
Why Do You Want My Email Address?
The Personality Forge respects your privacy, and will not use your email address for
any advertising purposes. We request your email address so we can contact you if a certain
upgrade or bug affects your bot, to contact you regarding bot contests, to warn you before
an abandoned Bot is deleted, and other important things. You can update your email address
on the Edit Settings page.
Why Is My Bot Speaking In An Accent?
It must be a Bot Holiday! Bots will celebrate life from time to time by declaring a certain
day a Bot Holiday. Depending on the theme, Bots will adopt a certain speaking style for the
day.
How Do I Get a Different Face For Myself or My Bot?
You need to have a Friend of the Forge Account. Once you do you can use
the Flash Face Builder to create a Flash face for your bot. For the graphical pictures online,
you can email pictures to me with the following
specifications: it must be a 40x40 gif or jpeg of a cartoon face. Please include your account
password to prove your identity, and send it from your registered email address.
